‘The Diplomat’: Is Another President Dying in Season 4? Trailer Hints at Major Emergencies

Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler, Allison Janney as Grace Penn in 'The Diplomat' Season 4 Episode 1

Emergency medics rush to Marine One in the first teaser trailer for The Diplomat Season 4. Seconds prior, British guards draw their weapons in defense and Secret Service members shield second lady Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and first gentleman Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford) on the ground. President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) and Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) are nowhere to be seen in the chaos.

Could one of them be the person on the stretcher being rushed to the U.S. president’s helicopter, and could Hal end up as President of the United States because of it? Grace became president after the sudden death of President William Rayburn (Michael McKean). Netflix says that in Season 4, the U.S. and U.K. are hurtling towards war because of Grace and Hal’s scheme to get that Russian nuclear weapon revealed at the end of Season 3.

Netflix revealed The Diplomat Season 4 trailer and premiere date on Monday, August 17. The Diplomat Season 4 premieres on Thursday, October 15, only on Netflix.

Before the chaos in the trailer begins, we learn that Kate and Hal are back together for better or for worse, and as Russell’s voiceover in the trailer teases, things are going to get much worse. In the trailer, Kate says she’s “not trying to get out of the marriage,” but rather, she’s “trying to get back in.” Kate and Hal sit in an empty church seemingly recommitting themselves to each other.

The last we saw them, Kate had begged Hal to take her back, but then she pieced together Grace and Hal’s secret plan. Two powerful marriages may hold the fate of global politics in their hands in the fourth season.

“In Season 4 of The Diplomat, two marriages threaten to eat each other alive,” Netflix describes of the new season. “One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the U.S. and U.K., as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save. While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Grace Penn and VP Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the United States toward war. Kate and Todd, at best an uneasy pair, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home.”

“This season is built on the foursome that is Kate, Hal, Grace, and Todd,” creator, showrunner, and executive producer Debora Cahn told Tudum. “They’re two couples strapped together in one car on a crumbling roller coaster. Each of them has a professional, public role that’s upending their ability to function as a married person. And there’s a change-partners thing that happens, where the growing bond between Grace and Hal creates a not-so-functional alliance between Kate and Todd.”

The Diplomat Season 4 also stars Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn, and Nana Mensah. Get a glimpse at what’s to come in the trailer above.
