‘The Diplomat’: Will There Be a Season 5?
The best season of The Diplomat is always the next one. Debora Cahn‘s political drama starring Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney, and Bradley Whitford ends on thrilling cliffhangers every season, and The Diplomat Season 4 finale delivers the best one yet. But will there be a Diplomat Season 5? Here’s what we know. Warning: The Diplomat spoilers ahead!
Is The Diplomat renewed for Season 5?

The Diplomat has not been renewed for Season 5, as of the time of publication. But given its rave reviews, its first Emmy win in September (Janney for Supporting Actress in a Drama), and its current place at number two on the Netflix TV series Top 10 (as of the time of writing), a renewal seems imminent. Cahn, creator and executive producer, does plan to make more of the series, should Netflix decide to renew it. Cahn told TV Insider that the finale’s final moments, when Kate Wyler (Russell) led a protest against President Grace Penn (Janney) at the G7 Summit, were a clear setup for more.

Grace recalled Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh) for dissenting from her plan to send warships against the British Navy. Kate, the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom, couldn’t stand Grace’s hawkish decisions any longer, so she publicly resigned at the G7 after Grace doubled down on her threat to attack Britain. Chief of Staff Billie Appiah (Nana Mensah) followed suit, followed by Secretary of State Miguel Ganon (Miguel Sandoval), and eventually Vice President Hal Wyler (Sewell).
Kate let Hal speak to the press outside of the summit instead of her. Cahn said this was “the difference between a diplomat who most of the world has no idea who she is” and a globally famous figure.
“In the fictional world,” Cahn said, “she’s perhaps known in the U.K.; she’s got a kind of a broader reputation now because she’s second lady, but [Hal is] the most powerful character on that chessboard.”
“For her to walk out, what we want to see is the difference between how powerful she is, as in some ways, a pawn inside,” Cahn continued. “You can be a pawn inside that room and create an earthquake, but outside, he’s going to be the most powerful voice. And so the statement about what just happened and why out of the mouth of the vice president is just way, way, way stronger.”
The big question heading into a Diplomat Season 5 is, according to Cahn, “Why did she do that?”
Who is in The Diplomat cast?
The Diplomat stars Russell and Sewell alongside Janney and Whitford. Ahn, Essandoh, and Mensah are series regulars, with Sandoval recurring. Rory Kinnear returned in Season 4 but isn’t seen again after Episode 4, leaving his appearance in a fifth season a mystery. There is also a major character death halfway through the season that we won’t spoil here. Aidan Turner and Jodie Whittaker were also part of Season 4.
