What To Know

- Season 4 premiered on October 15.
- Series creator Debora Cahn teases what to expect after the cliffhanger ending.
The Diplomat has been renewed for Season 5 at Netflix. The renewal was announced on Thursday, October 29, exactly two weeks after The Diplomat Season 4 came out in full on the streaming service. The season ended on a thrilling cliffhanger, one that series creator Debora Cahn explained to TV Insider, detailing how it sets up The Diplomat Season 5. Warning: The Diplomat spoilers ahead!
“Across all four seasons, The Diplomat has been in the Top 10 for 13 weeks, reaching the top 10 in 87 countries and earning over 130 million views since its debut in 2023,” Netflix says. “Season 4 premiered on October 15, 2026 and opened to strong viewership, reaching #3 on the Global Top 10 in its second week and entering the Top 10 in 63 countries.” Season 5 details will be announced at a later time.
In The Diplomat Season 4 finale, Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) protested President Grace Penn’s (Allison Janney) hawkish military action and her recalling of Foreign Service agent Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh) by resigning from her position as U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom in front of the entire G7 Summit.
This inspired Chief of Staff Billie Appiah (Nana Mensah) and Secretary of State Miguel Ganon (Miguel Sandoval) to do the same. As they walked out towards the press, Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) eventually followed. While we didn’t see Hal resign, he presumably did, but Season 5 will reveal the full story.

Kate was going to speak to the press about their actions, but she gave the floor to Hal instead. The final scene was a closeup shot of Kate right as Hal started to speak. We don’t know what he said yet, but this series tends to start the new seasons right where the last ones left off, so the Season 5 premiere might reveal exactly what he said.
Cahn explained why Kate let Hal speak for her.
“[It’s] the difference between a diplomat who most of the world has no idea who she is [and the vice president],” Cahn told TV Insider. “In the fictional world, she’s perhaps known in the U.K., she’s got a kind of a broader reputation now because she’s second lady, but he’s the most powerful character on that chessboard.”
“So, for her to walk out, what we want to see is the difference between how powerful she is, as in some ways, a pawn inside,” Cahn continued. “You can be a pawn inside that room and create an earthquake, but outside, he’s going to be the most powerful voice. And so the statement about what just happened and why out of the mouth of the vice president is just way, way, way stronger.”
Cahn smiled as she added, “That’s one answer. The other answer is, why did she do that?”
With The Diplomat Season 5 confirmed, we’ll get an answer to that question. Cahn also noted that Jodie Whittaker‘s character, new U.K. prime minister Bethan Vaughn, is a unique challenge for Kate that she’s long desired to introduce, implying that the character will play an important role in Season 5.
Following Nicol Trowbridge’s (Rory Kinnear) resignation, Kate “gets the dream prime minister on the other side of the table finally, and then it turns out that from that person’s perspective, we are the problem, we are the agents of chaos,” Cahn said. “And dealing with someone you respect objecting to your behavior is much, much different than having somebody you don’t respect, like Trowbridge, not liking your behavior.”
The Diplomat Season 4 also stars Bradley Whitford and Ali Ahn.
