‘Ted Lasso’: Why Did Jamie Tartt Leave A.F.C. Richmond?

Ted Lasso Season 4 may be reviving Coach Lasso’s (Jason Sudeikis) career in England, but, in the premiere, it revealed one major player’s exit. Warning: Spoilers for the Ted Lasso Season 4 Premiere!

The action for the series picks up stateside, where Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), Keeley (Juno Temple), and Higgins (Jeremy Swift) attempt to sway Ted back onto their team, but it takes some time for him to make a final decision; he initially turns down their job offer to coach Richmond’s Lady Greyhounds.

In a moment of reflection, the camera pans over old photographs, news clippings, and accolades, among which is a headline from Trent Crimm (James Lance) that reads “Gracias, Jamie Tartt,” with additional text revealing his farewell to the Richmond Greyhounds. While Season 4 has already been reported to focus on the women playing for Richmond, rather than the men, the revelation about Jamie (Phil Dunster) is an important one to consider moving forward.

While the Lasso way of things has likely carried on in England, despite the coach’s absence, it’s proof that nothing lasts forever and people can move on. The use of “gracias” in Crimm’s headline suggests that Jamie likely moved to a team with some kind of Spanish-language influence.

As for the reason that Jamie chose to leave Richmond, only time will tell. While we hope to see the character return before Season 4 is through — Dunster is not part of the returning cast — perhaps the others closest to him can shed some light on his decision to audience members. Fans will recall Season 3 concluded with him reconciling with his father, playing for Richmond, and bonding with Roy (Brett Goldstein) and ex Keeley.
