‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’ Trailer Reveals What the New Team Thinks of Hondo

Hondo Harrelson hasn’t lost a step. Shemar Moore returns as his S.W.A.T. character in the new Starz series, Exiles, premiering Friday, September 25, but while he’s clearly ready to keep rolling out, the new team isn’t quite so sure in the first teaser.
When S.W.A.T. Exiles begins, Hondo will have stepped away from leading the 20-David Squad — but he gets pulled back in to lead a last-chance experimental S.W.A.T. unit of untested and unpredictable young recruits. “Bridging a generational divide, Hondo must navigate clashing personalities and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is,” the official description teases. The high-stakes missions of the episodes include drug busts, hostage rescues, and gang warfare.
However, according to Starz, “Beneath the action lies a darker setup: the team has been hand-picked to fail. As tensions flare and betrayals surface, Hondo must fight to hold the group together, even as his own leadership and sense of self are tested.” The series also stars Ronen Rubinstein as Jude, Freddy Miyares as Ethan, Zyra Gorecki as Cassidy, Adain Bradley as Malik, and Lucy Barrett as Sammy. Also reprising their roles from the original series as guest stars are Jay Harrington as Sergeant David “Deacon” Kay, Patrick St. Esprit as Commander Robert Hicks, and David Lim as Victor Tan (in the penultimate episode).

In the teaser, which you can watch above, Jude asks, “Why bring a relic like Hondo back in?” But Cassidy chimes in with, “Hondo Harrelson’s our new team leader? Guy’s a legend.” The video promises, “More danger, more action, more Moore,” and offers a look at the team working together.
“The show looks different, feels different,” Moore told TV Insider in March. “It’s grittier, it’s darker, it’s smokier. I’ve got some new tattoos that I got for my own self and my own life that add to the edge of the character. Hondo is given an entirely new team of Rugrats, hence the name Exiles, and he’s got to somehow bring this Gen Z group of cadets and form them into a super cop team.”
His character is also “a little darker. He’s a little grumpier,” revealed Moore. “He’s had some personal life issues that he’s going to have to fight his way back from. He’s been exiled, kicked out of S.W.A.T., and he’s been given an opportunity to come back in and put all the pieces together, but it’s kind of a stacked deck to where he’s been put up to fail.”
