What To Know

  • Ira Parker, creator of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, wants to take a multiyear break after the final season of the Game of Thrones spinoff and return to show an older Dunk and Egg.
  • Parker reveals whether he would recast Dunk and Egg if/when they do that big time jump.
  • The show plans to adapt one novella per season, with at least three seasons based on current material, and may expand to four or five as George R.R. Martin writes more stories.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner Ira Parker has an ambitious plan to produce new seasons for years to come. The idea is to make a certain number of seasons while Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) is a child, take a break, and then return some years later to show Dunk (Peter Claffey) and Egg when they’re older. The other Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon, recast its leads for the time jump halfway through Season 1. Parker just confirmed he has no intentions to recast Dunk and Egg if and when the series jumps forward in time.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on George R.R. Martin‘s Tales of Dunk and Egg novella trilogy, in which Egg is 9-10 years old. The novellas, however, didn’t finish Dunk and Egg’s story. Parker told The Hollywood Reporter that Martin is writing a fourth novella. Martin has already given Parker some unpublished works about Dunk and Egg that they’re incorporating into Season 2, which will consist of six, 35-minute episodes, just like Season 1.

The current plan for the cast at their current ages is to adapt one novella per season, so three seasons total based on the currently available material, but Parker said, “I’d love to expand it from three seasons to maybe four or five.”

“Book four, which George is working on, takes place in a very cool location. And five is the last story point of Egg as a boy,” Parker explained. “So it’s a very natural ending place for us to take a break and come back when Dexter is older. So then we can do Egg the Prince, do some politics, do some fun stuff in Summer Hall and King’s Landing, and get a different vibe where they’re not on the road all the time.”

Parker is ready to return to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms at multiple points in his life, and he wants to do that with the same actors and creative team.

“Dexter is our Egg. Or, at least, Dexter is my Egg — I have no controlling interest in this property. But Dexter and Peter are my guys,” Parker said.

“If the show wraps and people are still OK with everything we’re doing and there’s still an appetite,” he added, “let the show evolve along with our leads, with myself and with the rest of our creative team as we grow older and the world changes and we want to say different things. I think that would be a lovely way to tell a story about these two guys through the course of their lives.”

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 is slated to wrap filming in August. Parker said that, despite filming delays caused by dangerous weather on location, the plan is still to release Season 2 in the first half of 2027.
