What To Know

  • After weeks of speculation about Mitch McConnell’s health, his office released an update with a hospital photo.
  • CNN commentator Scott Jennings, who previously claimed to have spoken with the senator, publicly celebrated the update.
  • Despite the official update, some remain unconvinced about McConnell’s condition.

CNN conservative commentator Scott Jennings took a victory lap of sorts on Sunday (July 12) after the office of Mitch McConnell provided an update on the health of the Kentucky senator.

McConnell has been the subject of speculation since he was hospitalized on June 14 and went weeks without a public appearance or an update on his condition. Conspiracy theories began to spread that the senator was critically ill, with some even speculating he may have died.

On Sunday, McConnell’s team sent an email update to his constituents that included news of his health. The update included a photo of McConnell sitting upright in a hospital bed with his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, by his side. He also appeared to be holding a copy of Sunday’s Washington Post newspaper.

In an accompany statement, McConnell stated that he suffered a fall and later developed a case of mild pneumonia. “My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion,” he wrote. “I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital.”

Jennings, who last Tuesday (July 7) said he’d spoken on the phone with the senator for around 20 minutes, took great pleasure in the belief that the update proved him right. The MAGA mouthpiece became the subject of mockery and memes when he revealed his McConnell phone call.

The former Republican senior adviser to McConnell first commented on a post by X user Jeff Storobinsky. “@ScottJenningsKY was telling the truth about Mitch McConnell as a photo and statement has been released from McConnell’s office,” Storobinsky wrote.

“Always have. Always do. Thanks Jeff,” Jennings commented.

He then shared a meme from The Office, where Michael Scott (Steve Carell) butchers the phrase “how the tables have turned,” saying, “Well, well, well, how the turntables…”

In another post, Jennings shared a clip of his segment on Kaitlan Collins‘ show discussing his phone call with McConnell. “The thing about being honest is that you never have to worry about a darn thing,” he wrote alongside the video.

Despite Jennings’ boasting, many still believe there is more to McConnell’s situation than meets the eye, with some even suggesting the hospital photo is AI-generated.

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly referred Jeff Storobinsky as a CNN contributor.
