What To Know

  • Dylan Dreyer revealed she was initially afraid to discuss her secondary infertility on Today.
  • The meteorologist opened up about struggling with fertility after welcoming her eldest son, Calvin, in 2016.
  • Dreyer hopes that sharing her experiences will help others facing similar challenges.

Dylan Dreyer is no stranger to talking about her kids on Today, but there was a time when she was afraid to be candid on air about the ups and downs of motherhood.

On the latest episode of The Parent Chat podcast, Dreyer opened up about her previous fertility struggles, particularly about the difficulties she faced while trying to have a second child with her estranged husband, Brian Fichera.

“When I first came on the Today show, it was after my miscarriage,” the meteorologist recalled. “And then, I had secondary infertility, and I was scared to death to tell anybody about it because I’m like, ‘Well, everybody’s going to judge me because I already have one child, and there are a lot of people who can’t have one child. And here I am, you know, how dare you want a second child.'”

According to the Mayo Clinic, secondary infertility occurs when an individual is unable to get pregnant after successfully carrying a baby in the past and “shares many of the same causes of primary infertility,” such as sperm and egg problems, fallopian tube damage, and more.

Dreyer noted that her secondary infertility was actually due to her uterus being “scarred shut.” She explained, “There was a reason why I kept having miscarriages and I couldn’t have any more kids. And then, he cleared out the scar tissue and I was able to have my second, and eventually, my third.”

Dreyer joined the Today family as a Weekend Today weather anchor in 2012 and has held her current role as a co-host of the morning show’s third hour since 2019. She and Fichera welcomed their eldest son, Calvin, in 2016, followed by sons Oliver and Rusty in 2020 and 2021, respectively. (Dreyer announced her and Fichera’s separation in July 2025 and filed for divorce back in March.)

Dreyer said she hopes she can help others by speaking about her own fertility experiences. “By sharing these stories, maybe somebody who’s sitting at home can be like, ‘Well, maybe that’s my problem. Maybe I’ll ask the doctor about that,'” she stated. “I think talking about it only does good things for everyone around us.”

Dreyer previously detailed her fertility struggles on Today in April 2019, including the miscarriage she experienced after welcoming Calvin. “We had Calvin right away, and I thought when we decided to have a second child, we’d have our second child right away,” she shared. “But I kind of had an interesting situation, because my C-section actually caused significant scarring.”

When asked how she was doing at the time, Dreyer said, “A part of me feels a little mad at my body for not being able to do this naturally, but that’s why we have amazing doctors, and that’s why I’ve got a great support system. And God has a plan, and I pray every night, ‘Just let me stay out of your way, and you do what is best for us, and we’ll figure that out.'”

Fichera, who was on Today with Dreyer, stated, “Dylan is the greatest mother, the best friend. Nothing of this was her fault. It’s just her body doing what it’s supposed to do.”
