Surprise! Dexter: Resurrection‘s second season will bring back Krysten Ritter in a guest role, Deadline reports.

Fans will know that in Season 1, the actress portrayed Mia LaPierre a.k.a. Lady Vengeance, a member of Leon Prater’s (Peter Dinklage) serial killer club. After she and Dexter (Michael C. Hall) became friendly, she invited him to join in on a co-kill, and he turned on her after realizing she didn’t really have a code, despite the constant news reports that she was targeting sexual predators. Rather than kill her, though, Dexter framed her for the murder that had been committed by his own son, Harrison (Jack Alcott), at the hotel. She was later found hanging in her prison cell by a corrupt prison guard who was paid off by Charley (Uma Thurman) on behalf of Prater.

After the character’s apparent death, Ritter expressed an interest in reprising the role. She told The Hollywood Reporter of a potential return, “I wouldn’t count anything out. We’re keeping our fingers crossed.”

So how, exactly, will she come back? Here are our best guesses.

She’s a ghostly apparition.

The most obvious answer to this is that, yes, she is dead and will return as one of the memory characters that pops into Dexter’s head. That’s how his father, Harry (James Remar), continues to serve as a moral compass for Dexter, and in the first season of the show, we saw several former favorites come back this way, including Arthur Mitchell a.k.a. the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow), Miguel Prado (Jimmy Smits), and James Doakes (Erik King). So, Occam’s razor tells us she’ll be returning that way.

Her death was faked.

Another possibility is that she didn’t really die in her jail cell. It’s entirely possible that her death was faked to get her out of prison. Given the billions of dollars Prater had at his disposal, and his fondness for serial killers, he might’ve had Charley arrange it so that she appeared to be dead but escaped prison instead.

It’s a flashback.

We didn’t get to see a lot of Mia’s background in Season 1, so perhaps the second season will remedy that and reveal what made Mia such a bloodthirsty killer in the first place.

There’s another twin twist.

The first season made the jaw-dropping reveal that Gareth Pike a.k.a. the Gemini Killer (David Dastmalchian) was actually twin brothers working together, with only one of them showing his face at a time to conceal their secret. Perhaps Gareth wasn’t the only one with a sinister sibling lurking in the shadows

She’s playing another character altogether.

Deadline’s report states that Ritter’s character “is under wraps,” which could mean that she’s just taking on another role entirely. It’s highly unlikely this is the case, but weirder things have happened in Dexter-land.
