David Bromstad Drops Big News About His Future at HGTV

HGTV fan favorite David Bromstad put his heart and soul into renovating his own dream home for his December 2025 special, My Lottery Dream Home: David’s Happy Ending, and it seemed to take everything out of him. Now the star is letting it be known that he could be retiring from renovation and makeover shows, at least the ones where he is the designer.
In a new interview with Barron Designs, who helped produce parts of Bromstad’s Tudor home, the beloved designer said that his special was “probably the first and last time I’ll be designing in front of America.”
Bromstad noted that he felt he had “something to prove” when it came to designing his own home. “It’s been so long since I’ve done any sort of design in front of America, right?” he said. “And I’m an artist, you know? I love my job with Lottery but I am a creative through and through. So it was really nice to be able to flex my muscles a little bit.”
However, the pressure Bromstad put on himself became too much, and things only got worse when a storm flooded his home. “My vision for the house was no longer clear. Everything was in chaos,” he said in the one-hour special, per EntertainmentNow. “I was starting to spiral. I got into some unhealthy behaviors, and it’s really easy to go there when you’re under distress.”
Bromstad took a break to seek help for substance abuse and mental health issues before returning to the project. He told Barron Designs that the hiatus allowed him to work on himself and find a different perspective on how to design his dream home.
“[After] working on my mental health, I was like, ‘I have nothing to prove to anybody but myself,’” he shared. “So, my design is a sneak peek into me as a human. Like, I’m unique. I’m different. I’m relatable, but also, like, completely strange, in the most weird and wonderful way, you know? And that’s my house!”
Bromstad was ecstatic with the final result and said he can’t imagine ever moving from his dream home or going through another major redesign. Therefore, it’s unlikely he’ll be inviting cameras back into his personal design process any time soon. However, he will still be helping lottery winners find their own dream homes across the country.
After winning the first season of HGTV Design Star in 2006, Bromstad became a regular on the network, hosting his own shows, including Color Splash, Beach Flip, and My Lottery Dream Home. The latter follows Bromstad as he helps lottery winners find a luxurious property after striking it rich.

David needs to put his mental health and well-being as a priority...He has a great personality and always seems like he enjoys helping people find their dream houses. Even though some people don't make it easy, with limited budgets.

I’ve watched him since day 1 love him and the struggles are real. It’s sad I’ve had many around and in my family die from substance abuse. I also struggled for a year with medications n 2 of my children passing away. But I am so glad he made it through the storm n is much better. If I ever won I would definitely look them up to help me I can’t even imagine how fun he would be. Love you David 🩷💖🩵🩷

I really liked him before he (in my opinion) went overboard with the tattoos and dress….wish he wouldn’t flaunt the gay persona so much also.

He has such a great talent and eye for what he sees when he sees the people he is about to work with. He has stated a few times about his mental health please take care its important to look inthe mirror every day and say "I LOVE ME" then begin your day.
What i do hate is the scammers out there using fake videos fake voice and the nerve to say their not fake trust me. Scammers looking to prey on someone for $$$$$gain. Then blame David when they get caught.
