What To Know
- Ben Schnetzer, who plays Van in The Madison, recalls a memorable shoot on the set of Season 1.
- Season 2 has already been filmed, and Schnetzer confirms that Van and Abigail will reunite, exploring their complex and compelling romance further.
Like other Taylor Sheridan shows before it, The Madison on Paramount+ filmed on location in Montana for much of Seasons 1 and 2, making for some gorgeous work days. There was one night shoot, in particular, however, that stands out in Ben Schnetzer‘s mind.
Schnetzer plays Van, a sheriff living in the Madison River Valley who struck up an unexpected romance with Abigail (Beau Garrett) during her week in Montana after her father Preston’s (Kurt Russell) death. Their chemistry was instant and unignorable, even though their lives were opposites.
Their connection deepened one night on Cade (Kevin Zegers) and Kestrel’s (Danielle Vasinova) ranch. That, Schnetzer told TV Insider, was his favorite day on the set of Season 1. It was also the last day on the Montana set in Season 1.
“There were a lot of incredibly meaningful days on set,” he told us on The Madison premiere red carpet in Manhattan in March. “There’s a scene that we shot at the end of Episode 3. It was the last scene we shot in Montana for Season 1 production, and that was a really special day of filming. Just being able to be with the group. Doing a night shoot, there’s always a special kind of frisson in the air where everyone’s really tired, and your inhibitions fall away.”

The Madison Season 2 has already been filmed. While Abby and Van’s romance was in limbo at the end of the first season, Schnetzer and Garrett told TV Insider that they will reunite in Season 2. Abby and Van addressed their serious feelings for each other in Episode 4 while on a picturesque date by the river.
“There’s probably something in how unrealistic or unattainable this is that is really enticing to both of them,” Schnetzer said of the connection. “There’s something about how it turns the volume up a little bit in cranking up that desire. If Van was just a guy in Abigail’s social circle in New York that she crossed paths with, you don’t all of a sudden feel the heat turned up because you know that this person might not be attainable. You can take it for granted more, and I don’t think they take each other for granted.”
