’60 Minutes’ Set for Massive Shakeup Before Next Season: How CBS Show Will Change
What To Know
- Bari Weiss, CBS News editor-in-chief, is reportedly planning a major overhaul of 60 Minutes after the current season.
- The changes are expected to involve significant layoffs and bringing in younger correspondents.
- Executive producer Tanya Simon and correspondent Scott Pelley may be at risk as Weiss seeks to make the show more relevant and impactful.
CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss has 60 Minutes in her sights for her next major network shakeup, with reports suggesting significant layoffs and a change in tone for the long-running news program.
According to Oliver Darcy’s Status newsletter, Weiss is looking at revamping the show after the current season ends in May. A source familiar with the situation told Darcy that Weiss is ready to “blow it up as soon as the season is over.”
While another staffer told the outlet, “no one knows what to expect,” Darcy reported that Weiss is expected to bring in younger correspondents who are more aligned with her editorial vision.
The New York Post shared a similar report, with insiders telling the outlet that layoffs are expected over the summer, potentially affecting some of 60 Minutes‘ top talent and producers. This comes after CBS News cut between 60 and 70 staffers last month, including the shuttering of its nearly 100-year-old radio division.
“They’re doing another round [of cuts] in June, and 60 Minutes people are on the list,” a source told the outlet, adding that Weiss wants the show to focus more on hard-hitting investigative reporting and major scoops, rather than “soft programming.”
“Bari wants to make the show harder,” one source told The Post. “No one is talking about 60 Minutes on Monday morning. She wants to put her stamp on 60 Minutes and how you do that is you either get rid of the top producer or the top correspondent.”
60 Minutes executive producer Tanya Simon‘s year-long contract is reportedly up soon. However, CBS insiders told the Post that Simon has “fallen in line” with Weiss and firing her would essentially be “ransacking the place.”
Another potential casualty is Scott Pelley, the veteran 60 Minutes correspondent who is a frequent critic of the Trump administration and not afraid to speak out against his own bosses. A source claimed Pelley’s contract is up in 2027, and the company could buy him out before then if Weiss wants to make a significant change.
The news of these potential changes comes about a month after long-time 60 Minutes correspondent Anderson Cooper announced he would be leaving the show at the end of the current season. While Cooper said he decided to leave to spend more time with his family, sources have suggested he didn’t agree with CBS News’s current direction.

Bari has already ruined the ratings for the CBS evening news, so it makes sense she is now trying to also ruin 60 minutes which had some of the best ratings in the business. But, anything to please the corporate overlords and the president of the United States.

CBS News was hemorrhaging viewers long before Weiss got there. The last elements of that dying audience are fading away just in time for the rebuild. As soon as a stake goes through the heart of woke at that network, things will rapidly improve.

CBS SHOULD FIRE BARI WEISS. CBS IS A JOKE!

T
"THIS" ->...(Weiss) is an ass kissing Nazi supporter of Orange Hitler.
I'm done with all the cowards, in what were once great news agencies. NPR is the only great, honest reliable news now. If CBS allows Weiss to get rid of Icon Scott Pelly you're destined to crash CBS! Pelly is THE BEST!

Because of CBS actions so far, the only thing I now watch on that station is 60 Minutes. Guess I'll be dropping that, too. CBS has some good shows, but I can't support their nimonsense.

First Colbert now 60 Minutes a staple for over 50 years of first rate journalism. Freedom of speech as long you don't disagree with it is now the standard at CBS. Shame!

I
Colbert has been the anti-Trump 2-Minutes-Hate show since he first took office in 2017. That schtick jumped the shark years ago. Let it go.

Terrible that people are trying to show us what they want us to see and believe and not what we want to watch. Just like the felon in office.

Was weiss hired totally destroy this network? She has made terrible decisions this far.
-
J
She was hired to turn CBS into another Fox 'News.' She words for some die-hard trumpers and right-wingnuts. All part of project 2025, to take over as many major communications outlets as possible.

I
You're kidding, right? This isn't a revolution, it's a counter-revolution. Woke destroyed CBS news years ago. She's just attempting to put things right and make CBS a hard news network again.

I will "vote" with my tv control. Mess with content and veteran journalists and I will simply change stations.

The changes to 60 Minutes are coming from Trump and his supporters………..remember how he stopped the showing of an already taped segment, because he objected to it? He is the reason 60 Minutes will lose top notch reporters. Trump wants it to support his far right.

60 minutes a great news cast. It sucks too much pressure from the government and the shareholders. I’ll stop watching it after this season. I know the show needs new blood to compete with other networks. It is time to retire some great journalists, and pass it to a younger ones and possibly gain new young viewers.RIP old 60 minutes.

Ratings will plummet and advertisers will run
-
O
If 80 million viewers boycott CBS we will see how that works with advertisers.

N
Walter Cronkite would be sick.
-
O
And the ratings will plummet
-
O
80 million other viewers will do the same
-
O
Time for a mass boycott and slash the ratings

Exactly

Good. Work on fixing this "news" program, too.

Love what she is doing as she rids the network of all the Democrat Nazi propaganda sympathizers. This news network has been a cesspool for years!

I
Long overdue. 60 minutes has become a fluff show. I miss the days when Mike Wallace would use ambush journalism on hacks and criminals. The Free Press has all sorts of TV-ready people under 40 that can do hard news.

Bye Scott...

Totally clean house and start over again.
