‘Chicago P.D.’: Jason Beghe Talks Chapman’s Confession, Voight’s Feelings, & More

The latest Chicago P.D. is a tough one for Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe): A past case, the first one he worked after his wife’s death, pops up again, and it starts looking like solving it (there’s a copycat, working with the original serial rapist) isn’t going to be so easy.
But then the search warrant they need goes through, thanks to a “confidential informant” … which, yes, as seemed to be the case after some earlier troubles, doesn’t exist and is a lie told by ASA Chapman (Sara Bues)—for Voight. It could’ve ended her career and taken his with it, Voight argues when Chapman stops by his house at the end of the episode. He doesn’t want her lying for him or protecting him because that’s not how it works, he stresses. She argues that he doesn’t get to dictate her choices, and she made a choice, risking her career for the girl who was held and for Voight.
But does Voight push back because he doesn’t want her to become him because he knows he needs someone who’s not like him in his life? “I don’t know if that was a conscious thing, maybe subconsciously, but I think that there’s a lot that you could say, whether it’s true or not,” Beghe tells TV Insider. “Maybe he didn’t want her to [do what she did]. He’s a giver, he’s saving people, he’s doing this, which is a certain kind of a way to express love. Even his brutality in the earlier seasons—it wasn’t just because he liked beating the s**t out of people, he was trying to protect and help others, and he was that passionate about it. I am not justifying it. I’m just giving the explanation for what made sense to him.”

It’s hard for him to be on the other side of that. “There are some people that can give but they can’t receive,” he explains. “It’s kind of like rush hour traffic: One direction is flying at 85 miles an hour and the other one is jammed. And I think that’s kind of a good metaphor for where Voight is. [He received] the love [from] his wife Camille, so here he is now in this maybe getting an opportunity to kind of open up that lane and let a little traffic through.”
Chapman also tells Voight she cares about him, she has feelings for him, and he doesn’t get to dictate those feelings. She doesn’t expect anything from him, but she’s going to make her own choices. But how does he feel about her?
“All we know is that last moment. I’m not going to interpret that moment for you, but going forward, we’ll see—from what I know of Hank Voight, if he was shocked about this, it’s not like he’s going to [go], ‘Oh, that’s crazy. No, get away from me,’ and avoid her and be a child. He’ll confront it, be honest as he can with himself and with her,” says Beghe. “There’s a lot to consider that seems rational. And clearly she’s extremely attractive and he respects her. And so we’ll just have to wait and see what it is that they come to create together.”
After their talk, Chapman leaves for Denver for a couple of months for a federal case. And according to Beghe, there’s no one who is going to be filling that void of a sounding board for Voight, at least not that he’s seen.
This season, Voight’s also dealing with a new deputy chief in Reid (Shawn Hatosy), who thus far is not interfering with the unit. For now, Voight doesn’t really think about him, but “he starts getting a little too friendly and it kind of puts up his spidey sense, his little antennae. And he may be right to wonder, WTF?” previews Beghe.

To start I think Voight needs a good female friend, confidant, to share a meal, a grocery store run, coffee, etc. All he's had is grief in his personal world. I think ASA would be good for him. I'm hopeful for them.

I think he needs a love interest.. he’s been alone, hurt & needs someone to bring out his soft side. To many people he’s cared for have been taken from him. She seems genuine & really cares for him…come on Hank take a chance on love!!!

She seems to compliment him , and they are similar in the way they work through things! She allows him to be vulnerable. They should give it a real chance!!!

I think it would be very interesting for them to end up in a relationship 🤔. Voight owes it to himself to give it a shot. She's highly intelligent and attractive.

Yes it is time for Hank to have a love interest and someone he can talk to. His wife died 12 yrs ago and he had his partner in crime Elias to talk to and pal around with but no one since then has he really been close to . He keeps his team members in line and his relationships with them are strictly business. I thought after Halstead left and he divorced Haley that Hank might hook up with her but that didn't pan out. So hopefully he'll hook up with ADA Chapman. Either way Hank is still taking care of business in his own way and getting the job done.

Hank needs a love interest. He lost his wife 12 years ago. Lost Justin 7 years ago and then Erin was whisked off to the FBI. Al is gone. He never sees his grandson. It's about time him and Kevin settle down. I don't see how Dick Wolf wrote scripts with them womanless. They're worthy of good women. Especially Kevin. What persona were the writers really trying to have fans believe about them 🤔🤔

I hope that Voight and Atwater find someone. Please can a little more of Burgess ? Also when Haily was leaving the show you kept showing her. So is Adam leaving the show ?

Voight has lost everyone close to him, over and over again, and you wish things were different for him. He often says, "The job is all that's left..." That's sad, and despite his way of handling things the way he does, he's a lovable person. The question is, to what extent can Chapman cope with this in harmony with her job, and to what extent can Voight perhaps change his actions? But is he still the same Voight?I'm curious to see the outcome.

I have watched this show from the beginning. It seems everyone has had a romantic interest that has lasted or the characters may have been written off in some way. Even in the other 2 series of the Chicago franchise, which I watch, the "bosses" Chief Boden in Chicago Fire and Sharon Goodwin in Chicago Med have had serious love interests so after 12 years, it's damn time for Voight to have a lasting significant other that doesn't get written off. ASA Chapman is a really believable, down to earth character who is tough yet vulnerable. She brings out a real sensitive, human side in Voight which for the first time allows him to think out his own happiness instead of always looking out for everone else. She is off to Denver, (hopefully for only an episode or two) and when she returns, I hope the writers will have already made the decision to allow the two to become involved and also not to drag it out by teasing us forever the way the writers did with Casey and Brett in Chicago Fire. Also, there is no need to hold back, but let them engage in some serious romantic, physical activity on-screen like what has been done in the past with other relationships (Halstead and Upton, Halstead and Lindsay, Ruzek and Burgess to name a few. I also thought that Voight was going to have some sort of relationship with Supt. Miller so since that ended with her leaving (not sure why), it is time for Voight to put away Camille's belongings and have a meaningful relationship with Nina Chapman.

I don't think it would work between them she thinks one way and not his way I like Voights,character aggressive protecting people love life will make him more meek rude the character
