With a two-month Warner Bros. directors’ workshop under his belt, Bob Morley (center, next to Sachin Sahel as Dr. Eric Jackson), who plays born leader Bellamy Blake, takes the helm for the first time in the July 23 episode, “Ashes to Ashes.” Costar Taylor says he was a natural: “I was so proud of him. Directing is something he was made for.”

Whether fixing tech or flying a ship, Raven (Lindsey Morgan, standing, with Greyston Holt as Gavin and Adina Porter as Indra) always gets the job done. “Damn right!” agrees the actress, who’d love to see Raven team up with a warrior like Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos). “Every brainiac needs its muscle.”

Is that you, Clarke? With not one but two roles in Season 6, Eliza Taylor says, “Getting to play Josephine was an incredible breath of fresh air and a welcome challenge.” Indeed, the selfish, anything-to-survive royal was the opposite of heroic Clarke. “It’s not often an actor on a long-running show [can tackle] an entirely different character,” Taylor adds. “I loved it!”

Executive producer Jason Rothenberg knows he’s blessed to have talents like Tasya Teles (formidable Echo) and Sachin Sahel (stalwart Jackson) on board. “We have such a good casting team,” he says of the folks who have found “these brilliant young, mostly unknown performers” to populate the postapocalyptic hit.

Notice something unusual about Shannon Kook (Jordan), Sean Kuling (Cassius), Ashleigh LaThrop (Delilah/Priyah), and Lucia Walters (Miranda)? Color! Sanctum’s resort-like vibe had costumers and set builders hustling to create a vibrant new world. “It’s pretty remarkable what everybody pulled off,” Rothenberg says.

Richard Harmon may look hot here, but filming Murphy’s Sanctum plunge — shot in a glacial lake near Whistler, British Columbia — was anything but. “Physically, he could not stay under the water,” Rothenberg recalls. “He would go under [and] one second later he’d pop up. It was so cold, his reflexes took over.”

“Octavia certainly has transformed herself since the girl we met in Season 1,” notes Marie Avgeropoulos, striking one of her “Don’t mess with me” poses alongside Jessica Harmon (Niylah, right). “She used to need [brother] Bellamy, [but] she’s learned how to protect herself — not always in the healthiest of ways, however!”

Despite his character’s ability to rattle some bones, actor JR Bourne is “a calming presence” on the set, says Rothenberg. And even though charismatic Russell Lightbourne has some literal skeletons in his closet, he may not be so bad. “His job as the leader of his people is to keep them safe,” Rothenberg adds.
