13 Horror Comedies to Watch While You Wait for ‘Widow’s Bay’ Season 2
Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay is the horror comedy sensation gripping the nation. Part mystery, part supernatural thriller, and part horror satire, the series has quickly become one of television’s most talked-about new shows as it ensnares audiences in its icy embrace and refuses to let go.
Apple announced the series’ renewal on June 11 after it garnered significant love and attention from critics and fans. But what will Season 2 be about? “Season 2 is about how everything is great on the island, and there’s nothing to worry about,” joked creator, showrunner, and executive producer Katie Dippold.
For fans who can’t wait to return to the island and all its hilarious horrors, here are a handful of hair-raising, heart-stopping, and humorous shows with a similar spooky tone to its satire to help fill the void until the next trip to Widow’s Bay.

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
2004
The cult-classic British mockumentary Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, created by Matthew Holness and Richard Ayoade, satirizes self-important horror authors through a hilariously inept TV series about a hospital built over the gates of Hell. Presented as a lost, low-budget sci-fi horror show, it stars Holness as egotistical author Garth Marenghi, who also plays Dr. Rick Dagless, M.D., alongside Ayoade as publisher Dean Learner, Matt Berry as Dr. Lucien Sanchez, and Alice Lowe as psychic Dr. Liz Asher.
Dead Set
2008
Before he traumatized audiences with Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker made this darkly comic parody of Big Brother. The series imagines a zombie outbreak erupting outside the Big Brother UK house, trapping the contestants, production crew, and host Davina McCall inside the set as the world descends into chaos around them.
Gravity Falls

It might seem strange to see a cartoon on this list, but Disney’s Gravity Falls earns its place. The series follows twins Dipper (Jason Ritter) and Mabel Pines (Kristen Schaal) as they spend the summer with their Grunkle Stan (Alex Hirsch) in a small Oregon town filled with paranormal mysteries. What starts as a quirky adventure soon becomes a surprisingly creepy battle against the sinister Bill Cipher (also Hirsch).
Scream Queens
2015–2016
Ryan Murphy meshes slasher movie tropes with over-the-top camp to create the iconic b*tchfest known as Scream Queens. Season 1 follows the elitist Kappa Kappa Tau sorority at Wallace University as they are terrorized by the Red Devil-masked killer, while Season 2 follows surviving characters to the C.U.R.E. hospital.
Ash vs Evil Dead
2015 – 2018
Starz’s three-season horror-comedy series Ash vs Evil Dead continues the story of Sam Raimi‘s iconic Evil Dead film trilogy. Set 30 years after the movies, it follows an aging, chainsaw-handed Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) as he is forced to stop a new Deadite plague that he accidentally unleashes. Aided by Value Stop employees Pablo (Ray Santiago) and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo), as well as his daughter Brandy (Arielle Carver-O’Neill), Ash and his trusty boomstick face off against the sinister powers of the Necronomicon in a blood-soaked battle to save humanity. Groovy.
iZombie
2015 – 2019
iZombie is the story of Liv Moore, a medical student (Rose McIver) who becomes a zombie after a wild party and, thanks to her new diet, can now read the minds of the dead. Working in the Seattle morgue to satisfy her need for brains, Liv solves crimes while trying to find a way to cure herself and live a relatively normal life as one of the undead.
Santa Clarita Diet
2017 – 2019
Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet stars Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant as Joel and Sheila as a pair of married real estate agents in Santa Clarita, California, whose mundane lives take a wild turn when Sheila’s midlife crisis takes a turn for the undead.
What We Do in the Shadows
2019 – 2024
The FX mockumentary spin-off of the 2014 film follows a dysfunctional group of Staten Island vampires: Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo Cravensworth (Matt Berry), his wife Nadja of Antipaxos (Natasia Demetriou), and energy vampire Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch). Alongside Nandor’s long-suffering familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), they stumble through centuries-old rivalries, modern inconveniences, and plenty of supernatural chaos.
Chucky
2021 – 2024
SYFY’s Chucky continues the overarching narrative of the classic Child’s Play films by making good use of legacy characters and mighty fine writing. While the first two seasons focus on Chucky (Brad Dourif) terrorizing a suburb and a Catholic school, the third sees the plastic psychopath head straight to the White House.
Reginald the Vampire

The SYFY series Reginald the Vampire starred Jacob Batalon as an awkward young man who is unexpectedly turned into a vampire. He then must navigate a world filled with physically perfect, stereotypical vampires while facing prejudice and working to protect his coworker Sarah (Em Haine), on whom he has a crush.
The Horrors of Dolores Roach
2022
Based on the play and podcast of the same name, The Horror of Dolores Roach is a gender-flipped parody of Sweeney Todd about a woman (Justina Machado) who, after being unjustly imprisoned for 16 years, returns to a gentrified Washington Heights to seek revenge against those who destroyed her life. With the help of an eccentric empanada shop owner (Alejandro Hernandez), her quest for justice quickly spirals into murder and cannibalism.
Shining Vale
2022 – 2023
Starz satirical series Shining Vale follows the Phelps clan, a dysfunctional family trying to save their marriage. To escape an affair and start fresh, they move from the city to a massive, creepy old house in a Connecticut suburb, where matriarch Pat (Courteney Cox) is stalked by the ghost of an unhinged 1950s housewife (Mira Sorvino).
Obituary
2023 – 2025
Irish dark comedy series Obituary follows Elvira Clancy (Siobhán Cullen), a twentysomething obituarist for a small-town newspaper who is paid per article. To keep her job, she boosts the numbers by murdering some of the town’s more unpleasant residents.
