Which One Chicago Couples Have a Future in 2021?

The first responders of the three One Chicago shows on NBC Wednesday nights — FireP.D., and Med — pretty much have it together when it comes to their jobs (with the occasional hiccup). Their love lives, however, are usually a different story.

Sure, there are a few stable relationships — like Fire‘s Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) and his wife Donna (Melissa Ponzio) and Lieutenant Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) and his wife Cindy (Robyn Coffin) — but for the most part, we sometimes wonder if some sort of 9-1-1 damage control is needed. The 2020-2021 season was no different, even if (or because?) it did see two proposals and a couple finally get together.

As we wait for all three to return in the fall, we take a look at which couples we think have a future going forward. (Note: For the sake of this gallery, we’re only including those for which both were series regulars this past season.)

Chicago Med, Season 7, Fall 2021, NBC

Chicago Fire, Season 10, Fall 2021, NBC

Chicago P.D., Season 9, Fall 2021, NBC

Kara Killmer as Sylvie Brett, Jesse Spencer as Matthew Casey in 'Chicago Fire' - Season 9, 'A Couple Hundred Degrees'
Adrian S. Burrows Sr./NBC

Brett & Casey (Chicago Fire)

We watched paramedic Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) and Captain Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) dance around each other and stop their relationship before it could even begin for quite a while. But in the finale, she returned his declaration of love. After what it took for them to get there, we’re going to be optimistic (and hope) that things are looking up for them next season and we get to see them together, happy, and as drama-free as possible for at least a bit.

Chicago Fire - Season 9 - Miranda Rae Mayo as Stella Kidd, Taylor Kinney as Kelly Severide
Adrian S. Burrows Sr./NBC

Severide & Kidd (Chicago Fire)

Lieutenants Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) got engaged (in the middle of a fire!) and right now, the only thing standing in their way is the fact that her promotion means she’s going to have to transfer to another firehouse (eventually). But we’re not too worried about their future, especially since they got past his attempt to help her career by distancing himself from her. (The higher-ups attributed her success to their relationship.)

Chicago Fire PD Crossover - Christian Stolte as Randy 'Mouch' McHolland, Amy Morton as Trudy Platt - Season 8, Episode 19
Adrian Burrows/NBC

Mouch & Platt (Chicago Fire & P.D.)

Honestly, we feel like we never have to worry about Randy “Mouch” McHolland (Christian Stolte) and Sergeant Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) — and we hope that remains true. Their relationship is as stable as it gets on TV, though admittedly, we don’t see the two crossing over as much as we’d like.

Chicago PD Season 8 Upstead Halston Upton
Lori Allen/NBC

Upton & Halstead (Chicago P.D.)

These two detectives finally crossed that line from partners to significant others in the eighth season, when Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) received a job offer from the FBI. But the timing of her proposal to Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) is a bit off — she had no choice but to shoot a suspect, in Sergeant Hank Voight’s (Jason Beghe) custody, and hasn’t told her partner. We can’t help but think there’s going to be at least one bump in the road for them next season.

Patrick John Flueger as Adam Ruzek and Marina Squerciati as Kim Burgess in Chicago PD - Season 8 - 'In Your Care'
Matt Dinerstein/NBC

Burgess & Ruzek (Chicago P.D.)

Surprisingly, we’re feeling a bit better about exes Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) — and she’s currently in the hospital after getting shot. After all, the two do manage to keep falling together and she trusted him to be her daughter’s guardian in case anything happens. A reunion seems inevitable; the only question is whether it’ll happen in Season 9. Even if it doesn’t, we have a good feeling about Burzek.

Brian Tee as Ethan Choi, Yaya DaCosta as April Sexton in Chicago Med Ethan April Season 6 Finale, 'I Will Come To Save You'
Elizabeth Sisson/NBC

April & Ethan (Chicago Med)

With Yaya DaCosta‘s exit at the end of Season 6, it’s not looking good for nurse April Sexton and Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee). Still, the finale did suggest they could get back together — she admitted she still loves him after he was shot — so we’ll have to see if they tried and failed to make it work or are trying to make it work offscreen when Season 7 begins.

Chicago Med - Season 6 - Nick Gehlfuss as Dr. Will Halstead and Torrey DeVitto as Natalie Manning
Elizabeth Sisson/NBC

Natalie & Will (Chicago Med)

If not for Torrey DeVitto leaving Med at the end of Season 6, the finale could have served as a great set-up for an eventual reunion for Drs. Natalie Manning and Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss). He risked his job (and got fired) to help her, she stepped forward to confess to protect him. Maybe we’ll find out they’re back together offscreen (it’s not like Will’s had any success with any other relationship onscreen). Maybe their relationship ran its course. But honestly, we’re not very hopeful.
