ABC’s The Good Doctor is losing another member of the team ahead of Season 2. Beau Garrett will no longer appear as hospital attorney Jessica Preston on the hit drama series.

The news broke via Deadline shortly before the series’ September 24 return, and served as a shock as she’s the second series regular who will not return. Earlier this year, Chuku Modu who played Dr. Jared Kalu, also exited the series’ second season.

Garrett’s character was connected to Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) as his daughter Maggie’s best friend — Dr. Glassman’s daughter died prior to the show. In a way, Jessica was like another daughter to Glassman, and she was even present for his brain cancer diagnosis in the Season 1 finale.

As Glassman prepares to battle his ailment, Jessica’s absence will certainly be felt. Still, there are plenty of cast members that have been upped to series regulars to balance the scales a bit.

The Good Doctor

Chukuma Modu as Dr. Jared Kalu, Antonia Thomas as Dr. Claire Browne, Beau Garrett as Jessica Preston, Hill Harper as Dr. Marcus Andrews, Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, Richard Schiff as Dr. Aaron Glassman, Tamlyn Tomita as Allegra Aoki and Nicholas Gonzalez as Dr. Neil Melendez.

Paige Spara, who plays Shaun Murphy’s (Freddie Highmore) love interest Lea, has been promoted. Also, The Good Doctor took on Will Yun Lee, Fiona Gubelmann, and Christina Chang as series regulars.

Meanwhile, Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce star Lisa Edelstein will join the show as Dr. Blaize, an oncologist who will help treat Glassman.
