Generations of music lovers have been singing along to Carole King’s infectious pop hits for more than 50 years.  If “Up on the Roof,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” or “You’ve Got a Friend” are not on your life soundtrack, it’s a good bet you’ve still heard King’s greatest hits growing up.

The phenomenally successful singer-songwriter is the subject of the latest PBS American Masters documentary, Carole King: Natural Woman, airing a few days after the 45th anniversary of her landmark album Tapestry (Feb. 10). (The DVD will be available on Tuesday, Feb. 23 via Virgil films.) Directed by George Scott (Rufus Wainwright: Prima Donna), the documentary weaves together King’s rare and never-before-seen performances and home movies, plus a new interview, to tell the story of her storied career, starting from early years in New York composing with husband Gerry Goffin to later years performing solo in Los Angeles.

Carole King: Natural Woman is another element in a major resurgence for the musician, who turns 74 tomorrow (February 9). King was honored at the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors, and Beautiful, the Emmy-winning Broadway musical about her life and career, is also a consistent success.

Get an exclusive first look of the documentary below, which includes footage of King dancing at her 1959 wedding to Goffin and singing some of her greatest hits (like “Natural Woman“) at a grand piano, along with stories from frequent collaborators, like concert partner James Taylor and songwriters Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil and Carole Bayer Sager.
