How sweet it is when ’80s-era sitcom The Goldbergs kicks off Season 6 with an homage to Sixteen Candles, the John Hughes classic starring Molly Ringwald.

As in the movie, the episode begins with Adam (Sean Giambrone) realizing his family — totally consumed by the pending nuptials of eldest brother Barry (Troy Gentile) — has completely forgotten his milestone birthday.

What’s a guy to do? Throw a party, of course, à la the famous rager hosted by ultimate cool kid Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling) in the flick. Alas, the festivities quickly spiral out of control.

“Adam realizes he’s made a huge mistake,” says executive producer and writer Alex Barnow. “What he thought was going to be an incredible opportunity to finally be socially relevant actually results in the destruction of his home.”
