Jeff Garlin made a dark confession about his final days on The Goldbergs.
In an interview on SiriusXM’s Where Everybody Knows Your Name, Garlin, 64, opened up about the mental health crisis he experienced in 2021. The “nervous breakdown” came amid allegations of his misconduct on set and his subsequent exit from the sitcom. Things got so hopeless that at one point, he planned to end it all.
“I had a nervous breakdown, and I was going to commit suicide,” he admitted. “I reached out to Susie, and I said, ‘I hate when people don’t reach out, but at noon today I will be dead. I’m letting you know I will be dead.'”
Garlin continued, “And she called [ex-wife] Marla, and she called [girlfriend] Sari, and my friend, Brad Morris. My girlfriend and my ex-wife called him. He’s one of my best friends. He watched me while they were looking for a place for me to go.”
Ultimately, Garlin underwent dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) in Ohio. “I went to Cincinnati because I was serious,” he told host Ted Danson. “I’m not going to some rehab in Beverly Hills. F***that, man.”
In 2022, Garlin was diagnosed with type 2 bipolar disorder. He said a combination of DBT, Alcoholics Anonymous, counseling, boxing, physical fitness, and creative projects helped him through this difficult time. Today, he is doing much better.
“I’m just now feeling really good,” he said. “Just now. Maybe the book coming out, but around now, really.”
The Goldbergs aired for 10 seasons from 2013 to 2023. Garlin played Murray Goldberg from Season 1 to partway through Season 9, when his character was killed off. In addition to Garlin, the show starred Wendi McLendon-Covey, Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile, Hayley Orrantia, George Segal, Sam Lerner, Patton Oswalt, Noah Munck, and Matt Bush, among others.
Garlin’s new book, Best Seat in the House: Moments No One Asked Me to Capture…But I Did Anyway, was released in September.
