TCM to Remember Robert Osborne with 48-Hour Programming Tribute
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) has announced that it will remember its longtime host Robert Osborne, who passed away Monday at age 84, with a 48-hour programming tribute airing all day March 18 and 19.
The tribute will feature an extensive collection of the long-form interviews that Osborne conducted during his 23-year tenure with the network. Notable highlights will include memorable installments of Osborne’s interview series Private Screenings and Live from the TCM Classic Film Festival; the special edition of Private Screenings in which actor Alec Baldwin interviewed Osborne on the host’s 20th anniversary at the network; and Osborne’s first-ever on-air appearance as a TCM host, with an introduction for the 1939 classic Gone with the Wind.
Osborne’s enthusiasm about classic movies was infectious, and is quite evident even in this brief, 90-second TCM promo clip from 2013:
The network says that the tribute will showcase that enthusiasm and the other qualities about Robert Osborne that were expressed yesterday in the statement about his passing given by Jennifer Dorian, general manager for TCM, in which she wrote: “Robert was embraced by devoted fans who saw him as a trusted expert and friend. His calming presence, gentlemanly style, encyclopedic knowledge of film history, fervent support for film preservation and highly personal interviewing style all combined to make him a truly world-class host.”
