What To Know

  • Bill Maher predicted that Democrats will perform strongly in the 2026 midterms but are likely to underperform in the 2028 presidential election.
  • Maher urged Democrats, specifically Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, to publicly denounce the Democratic Socialists of America.
  • Beshear responded by emphasizing that socialism is a failed experiment and that the Democratic Party should focus on practical issues that matter to most Americans.

Bill Maher made a bold 2028 election prediction for Democrats on Real Time With Bill Maher.

During the October 23 episode of his late-night show, Maher sat down with Steve Hilton, a Republican gubernatorial candidate in California, and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat. They discussed not only the upcoming 2026 midterm elections but also what could happen on Election Day 2028.

“The only thing really the Republicans have going for them in this election, I think,” Maher said. “Other than, of course, the cheating and the bulls*** election finagling, is that the Democrats, still really are not renouncing their far left.”

Additionally, the stand-up comedian predicted that Democrats would dominate in the November midterms but underperform in 2028. He also pressed Beshear to denounce Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

“Every election, I think, is always the first battle in the next election. So this 2026 election is the first battle in the 2028 election,” Maher pointed out. “I think a lot of Democrats are getting a false positive. Like, I think they’re gonna kick ass, and they’re gonna think, ‘Oh, the people want what we were giving them back in 2024.’ And they don’t. I don’t think they do.

He continued, “I would love to hear a Democrat say the DSA  — which, again, I’ve read this on the show, their own words — it’s not socialism, it is communism.”

To that, Beshear pointed out, “But you know, there’s only one current elected official in all of America that is taking government stakes in the means of production. And that’s Donald J. Trump.”

He added that socialism is a “failed experiment” and that the “focus of the Democratic Party” should be on what “most people” are focused on: “their job, their next doctor’s appointment, the roads and bridges they drive, the school they drop their kids off at, and whether they feel safe in their community.”

Maher also declared, “I would love to hear somebody say, ‘You are not the Democratic Party. You’re free to do this, but you should take it somewhere else and be your own party.'”
