The Institute, a supernatural horror series based on Stephen King‘s 2019 novel of the same name, begins its second season where the Season 1 finale left off: in the aftermath of a climactic escape from the torturous titular facility.

When we last saw telekinetic teen Luke (Joe Freeman), he was leading Tim (Ben Barnes), Wendy (Hannah Galway), and multiple other teens who possess unusual abilities to freedom.

Not everyone made it out before head of security Stackhouse (Julian Richings) got involved, though, and now, those who survived are on the run.

“We are closer to danger than ever before, arguably more than when we were inside the Institute, because at least then, we had a purpose that served their evil,” Freeman tells TV Insider. “There are more dangerous and ruthless people than even Stackhouse could imagine.”

“They have to find new and exciting ways to evade the Institute,” adds Barnes.

With countless facilities still active, things are going to get more intense — especially with their main antagonist, known only as “Man on the Phone” (Jeff Fahey), at the helm and poised to take on a bigger role throughout the new season.

“He’s a gutless man with no more morals than the worst person you could imagine,” teases Freeman. But keep your guard up because Barnes warns, “There always seems to be an even bigger ‘bad.’ [Stephen King] is a mastermind. You never really know what you’re up against.”

The official description for The Institute Season 2 reads, “In the wake of their climactic escape from Dennison, Luke and his friends search for a way to end the Institute for good. Meanwhile, the Director enlists a new ally, tech billionaire Nolan Reeves (Alfie Allen), to help him rebuild, and Sigsby’s (Mary-Louise Parker) life as a fugitive pushes her to seek a way back ‘in.'”
