‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’ Boss Breaks Down Mary & Fagenbacher’s Disaster Date

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage latest episode, “A Serious Journalist and Your Brain on Drugs,” brought Georgie’s (Montana Jordan) worst nightmare to life as he and Mandy (Emily Osment) bumped into his mother Mary (Zoe Perry) on a date with his nemesis Fagenbacher (Matt Letscher). Warning: Spoilers for Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 3 Episode 2 ahead!

While the couple was out to impress Mandy’s boss from the news station to help her land more hard-hitting stories, Georgie couldn’t help but be distracted by his mom and Fagenbacher, who were sat in his eye line. Mary, as a result, held her ground and settled in with a bottle of wine, getting drunker as the evening went on.

It got to a point where Fagenbacher asked Georgie and Mandy to take Mary home that evening, leaving the date early. The next morning though, Fagenbacher showed up at Mary’s door with a breakfast burrito in hand, and she apologized for losing her cool. Although she claimed she wasn’t sure if she was ready for a relationship, she surprised viewers and Fagenbacher with a big kiss before the episode was through.

“Georgie’s right to be suspicious when Fagenbacher first starts dating Mary, but I think in a world where he’s dating Georgie’s mother to get at him, he would start to feel like he’s some weird mustache twirly villain,” executive producer Steve Holland says about Fagenbacher’s intentions with Mary. “We think he’s more complicated than that. So to show a sort of softer side of Fagenbacher while still trying to hold on to his character of being a little bit rascally has been really fun to write.”

That softer side was on display in the different ways he showed care for Mary, and Holland says, “Hopefully, we’ll sort of round him out a little bit more. And it’ll be interesting to see what audiences think… if they’ll sort of grudgingly come to like him a little bit.”

As for what happens next after the big kiss, which is Mary’s first romantic turn after her husband George Sr.’s (Lance Barber) death, Holland adds, “In an interesting way, I think it all gets complicated. She obviously likes him, there’s an attraction. This is her first actually romantic thing, the first time we’ve seen her kiss somebody, and I think it’s exciting for her.”

But, as Holland puts it, “There’s a lot of guilt in it for her, and obviously, the deeper she gets in that relationship, the farther she’s pushing Georgie away. It’s all messy and a really interesting way to write.”
