What To Know

  • Paul McCartney criticized multiple Beatles films for inaccurately portraying him as shorter and physically smaller than John Lennon.

Paul McCartney called out a major inaccuracy he noticed across multiple films about The Beatles.

On the Tuesday, October 13 episode of the Good Hang With Amy Poehler podcast, McCartney, 84, sat down with Amy Poehler, 55, to chat about a wide variety of topics. Among them? The heights of himself, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

“Who is the tallest?” the Saturday Night Live alum asked.

To that, McCartney insisted, “We were all the same height.”

“I know. You really were,” Poehler said, with a smirk, prompting McCartney to respond, “You know I’ve got a thing about that, do you?”

“No, tell me more,” she teased.

He continued, “We were all the same height. Ringo was a bit smaller. And if you look at photos, we were all the same height. But Sam Taylor-Wood [now Sam Taylor-Johnson] did a film called Nowhere Boy and the John character she later married — Aaron [Taylor-Johnson] — he’s bigger than me in the film.”

Additionally, McCartney described the Paul character as “kind of wimpy, smaller than John.”

He explained, “John knocks me to the floor. And it’s like, ‘Sam, this is not true.’ And her only explanation, bless her because she’s still a good friend, she said, ‘This is a movie. It’s not a documentary.’ And I thought, ‘Hmmm, well, I don’t like that explanation.'”

McCartney then pointed out, “There was little Paul, John the great big hero, and it’s like, ‘No! It’s not true.'”

In an upcoming four-film cinematic event, The Beatles, Paul Mescal will play McCartney, which Poehler brought up.

“It must be strange to have people play you,” she observed, to which the singer confirmed, “Yeah, it is,” adding, “And guess what? [Mescal] is smaller than the guy who plays John.”

He recounted, “Sam Mendes is making the film. I said, ‘Sam, I’ve got just one thing that I need to say to you. Paul’s a big small… So I don’t know how Sam is going to deal with it. But he sent me a picture, a still from the filming they were doing, and they’re crossing the Abbey Road crossing. And the Paul character is markedly smaller.”

McCartney continued, “So I texted him, ‘Sam! Smaller! Don’t do this. You said you wouldn’t do it. He said, ‘No, it’s OK. It’s just the stride pattern.’ And he sent me another one where they were equal.”
