Phil Collins Reveals His ‘Forgotten’ Beatles Cover ‘No One Really Has Ever Talked About’

Phil Collins revealed his “forgotten” Beatles cover that “no one really has ever talked about.”

During a sit-down with BBC Radio 2 published on August 2, the Genesis singer, 75, chatted with Vernon Kay for a “Tracks of My Years” interview. Collins, 75, named the 10 songs he considers part of the soundtrack of his life. Among them was Collins’ cover of “Tomorrow Never Knows.”

“It’s a Beatles cover,” Kay pointed out. “It’s from your debut solo album, Face Value, from 1981.”

To that, Collins replied, “This is the forgotten track. And no one really has ever talked about it in the reviews or anything… When the album came out, it was just, like, everybody concentrated on “In the Air Tonight,” I guess. And everybody forgot about the rest of the tracks.”

He continued, “I loved when the Beatles did it on Revolver. And I always thought there was a different kind of song that was kind of trying to get out, you know? And so I decided when I was just fooling around with ideas for things… I kind of took a different way of looking at it. It’s a harmony thing.”

Collins also admitted that “Tomorrow Never Knows” is a “difficult song to do” because “it’s all one chord.” He added, “But I really liked that version of it. And I think it’s the forgotten song on that record. And nobody ever hears it. So we’re going to hear it.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the iconic singer and drummer shared that the lyrics to one of his biggest ’80s hits were “80 percent improvised.”

Collins retired from live performances and touring in 2022 for health reasons. In January, he revealed he is under 24-hour care following a spinal injury that caused nerve damage. He delighted fans with a rare public appearance in May.
