‘Best Medicine’ Bosses Talk Major Change for Town Events in Season 2
Exclusive
What To Know
- Season 2 of Best Medicine will feature fewer town events.
- Executive producers explain and preview one of them, the crate race.
Port Wenn loves its events. Best Medicine Season 1 established that with its various festivals. But for Season 2 of the Fox show, they’re pulling back on the number of events.
“To be honest, we started to feel like, here’s this town and it can’t have an event every week. It starts to feel unrealistic. So we’re doing less town events, but things that the town get invested in,” executive producer Rodney Ferrell told TV Insider on set this summer. For example, magicians will come to town at one point and do a show at the Salty Breeze, but not everyone gets into it.
Added executive producer Liz Tuccillo, “We will be going bigger with the ones that we have.”

However, at the time, they were in the middle of filming an episode (airing October 6) with a major event: a crate race. That “is an exception,” Ferrell allowed. “That is an event the whole town gets involved in. It’s crazy. It’s a yearly thing. We love it.”
Tuccillo revealed that the idea came from writer Cindy Chupack, who Googled fun small town activities. “We just all fell in love with it and we didn’t have room for it last year,” she said. “But we wanted obviously to attach to something emotional. So, this is more kind of talking about Martin [Josh Charles] as a child and doing the crate races and what it meant to him and what it brought up and his relationship with Aunt Sarah [Annie Potts]. And hopefully, you’ll have the fun and the emotion.”
But don’t expect to see Elaine getting in on running across the crates. “She has been a very supportive audience member” when it comes to events this season, Cree told us. That being said, “I think she’s probably bereft to not get the chance to see certain people compete who will end up competing.”
