What To Know

  • Katey Sagal will recur in Season 2 of Fox’s Best Medicine as Kathleen Gavin, Louisa’s estranged mother.
  • Get details about her character and her and Louisa’s relationship.

Dr. Martin Best (Josh Charles) isn’t the only one getting a family reunion on Best Medicine this season; Martin Clunes (the original Doc Martin) is returning as his father. Now, the Fox dramedy is bringing in Louisa’s (Abigail Spencer) mother in Season 2!

TV Insider has learned that Katey Sagal will be recurring as Kathleen Gavin, Louisa’s estranged mother who is described as “the only person in the world who’s not welcome in Port Wenn.” (We wonder how she and Eliza Coupe‘s Eden would’ve gotten along.) “Combative, conniving, and always looking out for herself, Kathleen unexpectedly returns to town after a long absence, sending Louisa’s life into chaos. Martin quickly discovers there’s a reason why the people of Port Wenn refer to her as ‘Shady Katie.’”

Exact dates for her episodes — and how many she’ll be in — haven’t been announced, but she will appear later in the season. Episode 6 airs Tuesday, November 3.

We have to admit that we can’t wait to see what Katie thinks of Martin as a potential match for Louisa — and what their relationship status will be by the time her visit rolls around. After all, sparks are flying between Louisa and Parker (Jack Cutmore-Scott), who’s one of the monitors watching Martin for the medical board. However, it’s unclear if he’ll still be around when Sagal’s first episode airs.

While Parker “sweeps her off her feet,” Spencer told us ahead of the season, “when she finds out there’s more to the story, she immediately goes to Martin, and you see that he’s her priority.”

Despite Martin starting off the season back with Eden (they’ve since broken up, again), executive producer Rodney Ferrell had promised, “It’s definitely not over for Louisa and Martin,” and Charles had said their feelings for each other are “always there.”

Martin still has things to work through, including his blood phobia, which now the town knows about, but what remains is “the hope that the ones we want to be together are going to be together,” according to Ferrell.
