‘Dancing With the Stars’: Jackson Olson & Guillermo Rodriguez Controversy, Explained

Jackson Olson stirred up some controversy among Dancing With the Stars fans with a comment about fellow Season 35 contestant Guillermo Rodriguez, which he has since deleted. He left the comment on an Instagram post from the Loco Beach Coconuts, which featured a video of Erik Ostberg recreating Rodriguez’s Week 3 dance on the field.

“But seriously how did you do this better than him with 2 hours of rehearsal,” Olson commented with a crying laughing emoji. He then added a follow-up comment that simply said, “3.” Screenshots of the comment had already begun circulating before Olson deleted it.

Rodriguez received the lowest scores of the night for his foxtrot (15/30), but remained in the competition thanks to fan votes. Many fans felt that Olson’s comment was hurtful to Rodriguez, who may not be the best dancer, but has been dedicated to putting in the work for the past several weeks.

Another person wrote, “This behavior is disgusting. Goodbye Jackson. No respect for your cast mates,” and someone else said, “I feel like people are very protective of Guillermo because he’s literally the sweetest man, and even if Jackson was joking about it, like dude, poke fun at someone your own age, not a 55-year-old man.”

Olson and Rodriguez are two of the 12 contestants left on Season 35 of Dancing With the Stars. On October 6, they’ll hit the dance floor again, this time performing routines to Mariah Carey hits. Olson and Emma Slater will be doing a waltz to “Without You,” while Rodriguez and Witney Carson will dance a samba to “Obsessed.”
