How Brec Bassinger’s ‘Buzzkill’ Role Let Her Embrace Her ‘One True Love’

Brec Bassinger is no stranger to memorable roles. From Bella and the Bulldogs to Stargirl to Final Destination: Bloodlines, the actress loves diving into genre work. Her latest role, Kendall in Tubi’s college slasher comedy Buzzkill, is no different.

Kendall is a college student who winds up trapped in her sorority house with a vengeful killer who loves a little bloodshed on a Friday night. Kendall’s pal, party girl Nora (Siena Agudong), realizes she can figure out the killer’s identity — but only by getting drunk so her tipsy memories can come back to her. Bassinger opened up to TV Insider about why Buzzkill, in all its campy glory, was such a treat for her as an actress.

“Don’t get me wrong, I love genre. I love horror, but my one true love is comedy, and this has so much good comedy,” Bassinger shared. “I feel like it takes so many classic horror tropes and just leans into them, campifies it, and that’s what really drew me to the project.”

Kendall is all big hair and a Southern accent, but it took some time to get to that point. “I think it was at the table read that I actually understood the comedy that Jem, our director, was wanting, and everything just clicked for me, and I was even more excited about being part of it,” Bassinger noted.

The actress, who is from Texas, admitted that she’s spent the “majority” of her life “trying to get rid of my Southern accent, so I can just play Middle America.” When the director called Bassinger into her office, the Bad Counselors star knew it was time to tap into her roots, which aligned her with Kendall even more.

“Obviously, the Southern roots I relate to with Kendall, and while she has some quirks that maybe I don’t necessarily align with, I do think Kendall, at her truest, is just…  Her friends are everything to her, and she just wants to have that girl group, and I very much resonate with that. My girl community is my everything,” she told TV Insider.

Bassinger gets to work alongside many of her fellow rising Hollywood stars, including Agudong and Aliyah’s Interlude. The trio had never met before working together, but they quickly became fast friends. “I was very familiar with her work. I had never met her in person. She exceeded any expectation I could have had,” Bassinger said about Aliyah. “And then Siena and I had a ton of mutuals, but we had never actually crossed paths, so the table read was the first time we all really met.”
