‘Buzzkill’: Brec Bassinger Breaks Down That Killer Twist & Talks Possible Sequel

One of the reasons Brec Bassinger took on the role of Kendall in Tubi’s slasher comedy Buzzkill is because it gave her the ability to do something completely different. At first, Kendall seems like your stereotypical sorority girl who will likely fall victim to the mysterious murderer who is killing off her fellow sisters one by one.

But as Nora (Siena Agudong) — or rather, Drunk Nora — unscrambles the killer puzzle over the course of the night, she makes a shocking discovery. She eventually finds herself face-to-face with the killer and fighting for her life in one brutal showdown. (Warning: Spoilers for Buzzkill ahead.)

The person behind the bloody mask? Kendall. Turns out, she’s been lying to everyone. She’s not the perfect, bubbly college student who has it all together. She’s a pint-sized murderess.

Bassinger told TV Insider she was “shocked” by Kendall’s killer turn. “But I think it adds so much depth to Kendall,” she noted. “The first read, I kind of was just reading her as the classic la-di-da sorority girl. And so that second read, thinking about everything that she was doing during this night out, [I was] shocked, excited. It’s a cooler character to play.”

The 27-year-old admitted that she’s often typecast, so Buzzkill was a way for her to step outside her norm. “This is very, very niche, but I’m always pregnant or killed, and so the fact that I was neither of those things in this movie, I was like, winning,” she quipped.

After Kendall and Nora’s gnarly fight, both are left bleeding out in the sorority house. When the police arrive, Nora wants to make sure Kendall is dead, but Kendall is nowhere to be found. The movie flashes forward five weeks later as Nora and her friends continue to recover from Kendall’s reign of terror.

When Nora goes to visit Beth in the hospital, Kendall can be seen lurking outside. She’s alive, definitely not well, and seems like she’s ready to kill again. “That ending really excited me,” Bassinger said. “I fall in love with my characters even when they’re psycho because I have to play them, so I have to find their humanity.”

With Kendall still alive, could a Buzzkill sequel be in the future? Bassinger would love the opportunity to play Kendall again. “All of us girls and Jem [Garrard] just had so much fun, so getting back together with the gang would be 100,” she said.

Bassinger’s latest role within the horror genre comes after her role as young Iris in Final Destination: Bloodlines. As she looks ahead to the future, the actress told TV Insider that she’s “hoping to venture out and try different things. I’ve been so fortunate to have such wonderful jobs, but a lot of times I get typecast. So this project particularly already, to me, felt so fresh and new. So if it’s horror in this aspect, I’m there every day, but if it’s a little bit more into that classic [horror], I think I need to spread my wings.”
