Will There Be a Season 2 of Netflix’s ‘A Different World’ Revival?

A Different World hasn’t even officially opened the doors to Hillman College yet, but it’s never too early to start thinking about sophomore year.

Netflix’s sequel to the beloved sitcom that ran from 1987 until 1993 premieres September 24, introducing a new generation of Hillman students led by Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), the daughter of original favorites Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) and Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy). Season 1 follows Deborah and her friends through their freshman year as they deal with school, relationships, family expectations, and figuring out exactly who they want to be.

But could their time at Hillman extend beyond freshman year? Here is everything we know so far.

Has A Different World been renewed for Season 2?

Not yet. As of the writing of this article, Netflix has not announced a second season of A Different World. The first season consists of 10 half-hour episodes and will premiere on September 24. That means any renewal decision will likely depend, at least in part, on how audiences respond to the new series once it begins streaming.

There is certainly more story to be told, though. Season 1 is about Deborah and her friends beginning their freshman year at Hillman, leaving the door open to continue following the group as they move through college.

When would A Different World Season 2 premiere?

Since Netflix hasn’t ordered Season 2, there is currently no premiere date.

If the show does return, viewers would probably have a significant wait before heading back to Hillman. Season 1 was filmed in Atlanta in 2026 before its September premiere, so a second season would first need a renewal, scripts, production, and post-production before arriving on Netflix.

What would Season 2 be about?

Safe to say, Season 2 would pick up where Season 1 leaves off, following the friend group — and their parents — through more college antics as they head into sophomore year.

“I think there’s thoughts that we would talk about in the writers’ room, but I don’t have thoughts without the proper room,” said creator Felicia Pride to Men’s Journal.

Who would likely star in A Different World Season 2?

If Season 2 continues following the same class at Hillman, the six central young stars would be the most likely candidates to return: Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah Wayne, Alijah Kai as Rashida Duvall, Cornell Young IV as Shaquille Johnson, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir Rodale, Kennedi Reece as Hazel Henry, and Chibuikem Uche as Kojo Achebe.

Netflix has emphasized that, although Deborah is at the center of the sequel, the new A Different World is very much an ensemble.

There could also be more opportunities for familiar faces. Season 1 saw the return of Jasmine Guy as Whitley, Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne, Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks, and Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson, among other original-series stars.

Exactly which legacy characters would return for another season would depend on the story. But for now, no Season 2 cast has been announced.
