‘A Different World’ Revival Reveals What Happened to Halle Berry’s Jaclyn

The Netflix revival of A Different World features the returns of so many original characters. From Whitley (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne (Kadeem Hardison) to the surprise appearances of Byron (Joe Morton) and Lena (Jada Pinkett Smith), the sequel series is a celebration of the past and the new generation. Warning: A Different World spoilers ahead!

The next class of A Different World includes Whitley and Dwayne’s daughter Deborah (Maleah Joi Moon), Denise’s (Lisa Bonet) son Ellington (Vincent Jamal Hooper), and Ron (Darryl M. Bell) and Jaclyn’s (Halle Berry) son Shaquille (Cornell Young IV). Berry does not reprise her role in the 2026 series, and the show makes sure to explain why Jaclyn isn’t there.

The reason? She’s dead.

Shaquille is a five-star football recruit, and Ron thinks his son should be a highly-ranked football school instead of Hillman. Shaquille is resolute in his decision to attend Hillman. “I promised mom that I’d come to Hillman,” Shaquille tells his dad in the first episode.

When Ron asks when this conversation happened, and Shaquille explains, “It was a thing between her and I before she passed. She thought coming here would help build me up so I can be ready for the world and be like you.” The show hasn’t revealed how Jaclyn died.

In Episode 2, Ron texts Shaquille after Hillman’s big win. “Mom would be proud,” Ron tells his son. (Did you catch that use of the past tense?) Shaquille then looks over at an old photo of Ron and Jaclyn. At the end of the season, as Shaquille cleans out his dorm room ahead of transferring to Colorado, he gazes fondly at a photo of himself with his mother.

“We love a meaningful Easter egg,” showrunner Felicia Pride tells Entertainment Weekly. “We also allude to it in Episode 9, where Ron talks about that Valentine’s thing that he had with three other women. That is one of our biggest Easter eggs for those OG fans, and it was just really, really fun and felt meaningful and like a great way to nod to the original series.”

Berry only appeared in one episode of the original series, “Love, Hillman-Style,” which aired in 1991. Jaclyn was one of the three woman Ron was romancing on Valentine’s Day. The show ended in 1993, but now we know Ron and Jaclyn got together and had a family in their post-college years.
