‘Crystal Lake’ Ending, Explained: Who Lives & Dies in ‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel Series?
Spoiler Alert
What To Know
- The prequel series to the Friday the 13th films, Crystal Lake, has arrived on Peacock.
- Here’s a spoiler-filled breakdown of the eight-part show’s violent ending.
All eight episodes of the new Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake, have arrived on Peacock. In addition to containing some stylish homages to the original slasher film series, the series also lifts the veil on how exactly the Voorhees came to be the generationally relentless murderers that ’80s horror fans know them to be.
So how did it all come together in the end? Warning: The following post contains spoilers for all eight episodes of Crystal Lake.
What is Project Argonaut?
In the penultimate episode, a flashback segment, Project Argonaut was revealed once Pamela (Linda Cardellini) became pregnant with her then-boyfriend-turned-husband Elias Wittering (Hamish Linklater). After bleeding out during a nightclub performance as a singer, she was desperate to keep the baby and agreed to an experimental fertility treatment in Texas provided by Elias’ company, Bellflower.
What she didn’t know was that her fetus was secretly being treated with radioactive materials, as the company worked to create a nuclear blast-surviving version of a human being akin to a cockroach. Jason (Callum Vinson), or “Subject J” as his own father so lovingly called him, was the first truly successful test subject, but there were many other babies who’d been given the same treatment… with often horrifying results, as Pamela would later discover.
How did Pamela and Jason escape?
Though Elias assured Pamela that then-young Jason was simply receiving proper medical treatment for the injuries sustained after she accidentally fell asleep during his bath, causing him to drown — a bit of gaslighting over the guilt she experienced for letting that happen, of course — after a birthday party where Jason’s hair began to fall out, she noticed a decline in his wellness and disturbing drawings of himself being tortured at the facility.
Thanks to a tip from a very guilty Dr. Landau (Christopher Denham), assistant to Project Argonaut’s chief Dr. Valentine (Jeffrey Bean), along with a set of keys to the facility, Pamela sprung Jason from Argonaut during Elias’ company-wide presentation about the project — even stabbing Dr. Valentine in the face to escape.
What happened to Jason?
Thanks to the nuclear preparedness treatments given to Jason by his father, Dr. Valentine, and the others at the Bellflower research facility, Jason was born with an oversized skull and the superhuman ability to survive all manner of deadly encounters — including, as we later see, drowning, gunshots to the head, and more.
His accidental “death” at Camp Crystal Lake merely made him regenerate as a stronger, bigger version of himself … and every deadly experience thereafter does the same thing. This development in Crystal Lake finally explains why Jason, in the film series, always had such an inhuman ability to survive so many defensive wounds throughout the Friday the 13th film series. It wasn’t supernatural; it was science.
Why did Pamela murder people?
Pamela, who was treated with anti-psychotics by her husband’s company to control her, suffered from severe post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of her encounter with Project Argonaut and the drowning of Jason at Camp Crystal Lake. However, her first few murders were in self-defense (taking out Dr. Valentine to escape, then the two pursuers from Bellflower). However, as her “Experience” retreat revealed, she had been suppressing a violent side all the while, deep down.
Although her maternal feelings for Grace (Gwendolyn Sundstrom) initially helped her cope with her overwhelming grief over the apparent drowning and certain months-long disappearance of Jason at Camp Crystal Lake, Pamela still had violent urges and let them fly in key moments against people like Grace’s abusive mother, Valerie (Tonya Glanz), a camp counselor who was having sex instead of watching Jason when he disappeared, Claudette (Danielle Kotch), whom Grace stabbed first under the influence of drugs, and more.

Who died in Crystal Lake?
In addition to Valerie, Dr. Valentine, Claudette, and other unnamed camp counselors, Jason also killed his own father, Elias, in a falsely emotional reunion. Meanwhile, Chief Levon Brooks (William Catlett) was shot by one of Elias’ goons who stormed the police station in search of Pamela, and his fate was left unknown. Plus, Pamela murdered two of the other company men who were after her — leaving their corpses at a cave to be eaten, apparently, by a bear that may or may not have actually existed — along with some of the commune teens who’d brought Grace along to do LSD with her. Levon and his deputy, Dorf (Cameron Scoggins), also took out some of the Bellflower hands, with Jason finishing the rest in brutal fashion. On top of that, Elias himself killed Dr. Landau in his pursuit of Pamela, and a woman who was searching for Pamela’s first victims of the series was also murdered and skinned, presumably by Jason.
How did Crystal Lake end?
Thanks to dedicated investigative reporting by Levon’s sister, journalist Brianna (Devin Kessler), which included getting Pamela’s file from Dr. Landau before his untimely demise at a county fair, Devon found out the truth about Pamela and eventually extracted a confession from her about what really happened… and to her great surprise, he and Brianna both believed her story and worked to help.
After Elias talked a townie into revealing her whereabouts and ultimately stormed the police station where she was hiding, though, she was at the mercy of the Bellflower goons and only escaped their clutches once Jason blocked their car on the way out. After he murdered everyone else in the company, including Elias, he almost choked Pamela to death, too, before remembering her loving treatment of him as a child.
Instead, Jason let Pamela go, and after the wood-dwelling Ralph (Nick Cordileone) found them and shot Jason in the head, he escaped, leaving Pamela to cackle wildly in the woods about her son’s strength. Once another round of campers descended on Camp Crystal Lake, including the surviving ex of Claudette, Barry (Phoenix Parnevik), they told stories of the people who’d been murdered in those same woods before the familiar “ki-ki-ki, ma-ma-ma” sound began to ring out behind them. Ruh roh.
Who survived in Crystal Lake?
It’s unclear if Chief Brooks survived, but Brianna and Dorf were unharmed in the police station melee by Elias. Pamela also survived, as did Jason. Also alive at the end of Crystal Lake were Barry, Ralph, Harmony f.k.a. Mary Sacrimoni (Manon Gage), Rita (Joy Suprano), Enos (Daniel Stewart Sherman), Grace, and various other Crystal Lake citizens.
