Marilu Henner Joins ‘When Calls the Heart’ Season 14 as Key Family Member

The When Calls the Heart family is getting bigger in Season 14. Hallmark fave Marilu Henner has joined the ensemble cast as Bernice “Birdie” Grant, per People.

Yes, we’re finally meeting Nathan’s mom! She’ll be arriving in Hope Valley on horseback, ready to celebrate Nathan (Kevin McGarry) and Elizabeth’s (Erin Krakow) impending nuptials. Hallmark describes Birdie as “free-spirited and colorful.” She takes an “instant liking to Elizabeth, instantly wrapping her in a firm hug.”

The character is a “well-traveled adventurer” and most recently spent time in Switzerland, “where she helped the needy on a church trip, but she is not above getting into a bit of mischief.  Optimistic and resourceful, she makes the best out of a situation in times of need, always with heart and humor.”

Henner has starred in several Hallmark movies through the years, notably playing Aida Teagarden in the Aurora Teagarden Mysteries films. Now she can add the network’s longest-running series to her resume!

“I’ve been a proud member of the Hallmark family for many years, and now I’m even more thrilled to be part of its crown jewel, When Calls the Heart!” the 74-year-old told the outlet. “This role is particularly special to me, because I get to play Nathan’s mother, the fabulous and feisty Birdie! And I’m very lucky that Elizabeth is going to be my daughter-in-law!”

The actress has already made her way to Hope Valley to film her Season 14 scenes. “The whole cast is talented and welcoming. They truly are a family,” she said. “I want to move to Hope Valley!”

Season 14, which will premiere in 2027, will also feature the return of Lori Loughlin‘s Abigail Stanton. The beloved character made a cameo at the end of Season 13, marking her first appearance on the show since Season 6.
