What To Know

  • Jaclyn Smith claims in her memoir that Kate Jackson resented Charlie’s Angels.
  • Smith describes Jackson as a complex person with a temper.
  • Jackson also reportedly struggled to accept Cheryl Ladd, who replaced Farrah Fawcett.

Charlie’s Angels star Kate Jackson reportedly “resented” the show, her former co-star, Jaclyn Smith, claims.

In Smith’s new memoir, I Once Knew a Guy Named Charlie, she detailed Jackson’s “temper,” per Page Six, as well as the reason Jackson thought she deserved a share of the show’s profit as a creator.

Smith, 80 — who played Kelly Garrett in the original Charlie’s Angels — claimed that Jackson (Sabrina Duncan), 77, was a “complex person,” and that her anger “could get the best of her. During one incident, the “savvy and skilled, and at times downright silly” Jackson allegedly “flew into a fury over some slight.”

“She climbed behind the wheel of her motor home, with me by her side, and just drove it in circles around the lot, over and over,” Smith wrote. “It was funny at first, but the teamsters were not happy with us.”

At one point, Jackson also reportedly locked herself, Smith, and their Charlie’s Angels co-star, Farrah Fawcett, in her trailer because she was upset about having to give up their lunch break for a photoshoot. (Fawcett died in 2009 at 62.)

Smith also recounted how Jackson would “shout every four-letter word in the book… at the top of her lungs” to prepare for scenes. In doing so, Jackson would allegedly exclaim a “long, bellowed string of expletives that made even the cameramen and lighting guys blush.”

So, why did Jackson feel “a lot of resentment” toward Charlie’s Angels? According to Smith, it’s because Jackson helped come up with the title of the show, as well as the concept that the Angels never actually met Charlie in person.

“She felt that she was owed both an acknowledgment and a piece of the profit as a creator,” Smith claimed — but “the producers disagreed.”

Additionally, Smith revealed that Jackson often butted heads with Cheryl Ladd, who replaced Fawcett in Season 2. “It was difficult feeling caught between Kate and Cheryl,” she admitted. “Kate never fully accepted Cheryl. Maybe it was because she missed Farrah, and in Kate’s mind no one could take her place.”

Charlie’s Angels aired for five seasons from 1976 to 1981. In addition to Jackson, Smith, Fawcett, and Ladd, the show starred Shelley Hack, Tanya Roberts, David Doyle, and John Forsythe.

I remember hearing that Kate Jackson thought she was going to be more the star of the show than the Jacklyn or Farrah as she had more experience as an actress since she was on "The Rookies." She was a bit resentful that they all received equal billing.

I also read that she was very close with Farrah, and that even though it was Farrah's idea to leave after the first season, Kate resented Cheryl since she took Farrah's place. It seemed like Cheryl worked hard to fit in, and she was was puzzled by some of Kate's behavior towards her.
