Bill Maher blasted Democrats for their hypocrisy over President Donald Trump‘s renaming of Lake Ontario to Lake America.
During the Friday, August 28 episode of Real Time With Bill Maher, the late-night host, 70, addressed the controversial executive order. It marks one of Trump’s latest moves in the ongoing trade war between the U.S. and Canada.
“We’ve been tariffing them, and then they were tariffing us back. You know, it looked like we were heading for some sort of a deal, but then no, no deal. Why? Because they’ve been taking advantage of us!” Maher said in a mocking fashion during his opening monologue. “Yeah. F*** yeah, man! Every time I see a Canadian, I’m like, ‘This is the guy who’s been f***ing with me all these [years].'”
He added, “I just wanted to say to our viewers in Canada, we’re still cool, right? It’s not all of us. We like you.”
Maher also pointed out, “Trump is so mad at Canada, he renamed Lake Ontario ‘Lake America.’ Now I gotta buy a new globe again. This is like the fifth time it’s happened.”
He then took aim at Democrats, adding, “Liberals are very pissed at this. They say you can’t just go around renaming things to suit your political agenda. Just ask any Latinx birthing person.”
Later in the episode, Maher again slammed the left while venting about Israel amid its war against Hamas in Gaza.
“Israel was known as an outpost of Western civilization,” he pointed out during a conversation with Wesleyan University President Michael Roth. “And that’s what it was called. That was always a good thing. Now, I don’t think it is.”
Maher continued, “Western civilization — they talk about it like it’s a bad thing, instead of saying Western civilization is what gave everyone who’s a progressive the things they should be most proud of.”

The one thing he didn’t address was when Trump imposed tariffs on Canada, Canada responded by imposing selective tariffs on the US targeted at the heart of MAGA nation. The tariffs hit mostly at red states and in some cases specific counties in those red states.
The only response from Trump was the grandiose gesture with lots of media coverage of him renaming a lake which has zero impact on the tariff war and a morale boost for the MAGA’s.
Trump started a war with Canada and like the war with Iran he had no plans to continue the fight expecting the other side to immediately capitulate in fear of facing Trump.
Trump bullied his way into the wars and has no clue about what to do when they fight back.

Maher is just trying to play both sides. He's waffling. But I think whoever wrote this article is trying to stir things up. Unless Maher said something about the lake renaming that's not reflected here, I don't see the word 'hypocrisy' in his words. There are two instances of the word in the article/headline, but those were written by the person who wrote the article, NOT by Maher.

There’s a reason why people are outraged. Historically, how land was claimed was greedy humans planted a flag, named it and said this belongs to me now. It goes beyond just a silly name. There is actual historical precedent to this and declarations of war (look it up). It’s all part of Project 2025. Bill is just another uninformed American who giggles when Trump does something like this when the people advising him know exactly what they’re doing and why.
