Netflix is back once again with another true crime documentary. Death of the Pastor’s Wife will explore the life and tragic death of Mica Miller, who was married to the pastor of Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Mica’s friends and family speak out in the documentary series, shedding light on what was going on in Mica and John-Paul Miller’s tumultuous marriage. They also discuss the final days of Mica’s life and what happened after her death as they search for answers. Ahead of the premiere of Death of the Pastor’s Wife, here’s what you need to know about Mica Miller’s case, her husband, and more.

When will the Mica Miller documentary premiere?

Death of the Pastor’s Wife will debut on Netflix on August 26. The documentary series will consist of three episodes.

What happened to Mica Miller?

On April 27, 2024, Mica left her home and drove to Dick’s Pawn Shop in Myrtle Beach. She purchased a weapon and ammunition. Mica then drove to Lumber River State Park in North Carolina, where she placed a 911 call. She asked the dispatcher if her location could be traced because she was “about to kill” herself. She wanted her family to know where to find her.

Police were dispatched to the state park to do a welfare check. Upon arrival, Johnnie Jacobs called 911 to report that he’d found a body in the water at the state park while fishing. The body was identified as Mica. (A year after finding Mica’s body, Johnnie was tragically killed in a car accident.)

Just weeks before her death, Mica filed for separation from John-Paul. A hearing for the separation had been set for June 5, according to The Sun News. In October 2023, Mica had filed for divorce from John-Paul, but it was dismissed in February 2024. John-Paul then turned around and filed for separation, but it was dismissed.

There were several police reports that included Mica’s claims of abuse against her husband. According to court documents obtained by News13, Mica alleged that John-Paul had her “involuntarily hospitalized” to steal her car and had “groomed” her for years. She had met John-Paul when she was 10 years old, and he was nearly two decades older than her. John-Paul claimed that Mica had “episodes on an annual basis” and “spends large amounts of money when she stops taking her prescribed medication.”

What was Mica Miller’s cause of death?

After an autopsy was completed, the medical examiner determined that Mica had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. “Based on the nature of the wound, that it is consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. And it was not in the back of the head, as it has been speculated,” Robeson County Medical Examiner Dr. Richard Johnson said.

Since she was still married to John-Paul at the time of her death, her body was released to him after the autopsy. John-Paul had Mica cremated.

Where is Mica Miller’s husband now?

In December 2026, John-Paul was indicted for cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators. The indictment alleged that John-Paul sent “unwanted and harassing communications to his estranged wife until her death on April 27, 2024. The harassing behavior included Miller posting a nude photo of the victim online without her consent, causing tracking devices to be placed on her vehicle, and in one instance, contacting her over 50 times in a single day,” as well as interfering with “her finances and her daily activities and on one occasion damaged her vehicle tires.”

Regarding making false statements, when federal investigators interviewed the Myrtle Beach pastor about the allegations, he lied in his responses. If convicted, John-Paul faces up to five years in prison for cyberstalking and up to two years in prison for his false statement. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

John-Paul is expected to appear in court on August 27 for a pretrial conference, according to ABC4 News. Despite the indictment and fallout from Mica’s death, John-Paul is preaching at Mercy Church Ministries in Myrtle Beach. He is also now married to Suzie Skinner, a woman he met through Solid Rock Church.

Is this the Victorian Age? Don’t we have no fault divorces? Why did the court prevent a divorce which I hindsight would have prevented tragedy?
