MS NOW’s Lawrence O’Donnell Mocks ‘Weak’ and ‘Helpless’ Trump
What To Know

- O’Donnell linked Trump’s low approval ratings to ongoing issues like rising costs and the prolonged war with Iran.
- He questioned the future of Trump’s endorsements, suggesting that they no longer have ‘value.’
MS NOW anchor Lawrence O’Donnell said that President Donald Trump appears to have lost his “magical” touch when it comes to endorsing political candidates.
On Tuesday’s (August 18) edition of The Last Word, O’Donnell pointed to how Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) lost the GOP primary for Florida’s 7th Congressional District. Trump previously supported Mills back in February, but left the congressman off an endorsement list posted to social media last week.
Mills lost his bid amid accusations of domestic violence and campaign finance violations. The House Ethics Committee and Justice Department have launched probes into Mills’ dealings. O’Donnell argued that Mills’ loss shows that Trump has “lost his magical powers with Republican voters.”
The host focused on Florida specifically, airing a clip of one Orlando-based Trump voter who said that people are “suffering” due to rising costs, per The Huffington Post. O’Donnell pointed to Trump’s war with Iran for rising prices of gas and groceries, saying that the president will “never apologize” for the war because he believes he “did the right thing.”
“Voters don’t think Trump did the right thing,” O’Donnell argued, citing a recent Reuters poll that showed the president with a 33 percent job approval rating, the lowest of his second term. The same poll noted that 80 percent of participants, including 71 percent of Republicans, believe the conflict in the Middle East will continue for an extended period.
“Trump confirmed that those voters are right,” O’Donnell said, highlighting a Fox News interview from Monday (August 17), in which Trump said he has “no time schedule” for the war, while also stating, “The midterms have nothing to do with my thinking.”
O’Donnell added, “We have every right to believe that what we are hearing there… is that Donald Trump feels helpless, Donald Trump feels lost, Donald Trump feels weak. Donald Trump feels there’s nothing he can do to stop the Democrats from winning in November, and there’s nothing he can do to stop his war.”
Looking ahead to the midterms, O’Donnell wondered if Trump’s endorsements have now lost “value,” adding, “JD Vance and Marco Rubio have been betting their entire political futures on the idea that Donald Trump will be the kingmaker in the next presidential election. What if he isn’t?”

I'll believe Trump's endorsements are losing power if Ken Paxton loses the Texas senate.
