MS NOW anchor Lawrence O’Donnell has called on Vice President JD Vance to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Donald Trump from office following the latest example of the president’s “utter insanity.”
O’Donnell made the comments on Monday’s (October 19) edition of The Last Word as he discussed Trump’s “overwhelming disapproval numbers” ahead of the November midterms. The host noted the strange direction the president has taken on the campaign trail recently.
“The Republican campaigner in chief, who started the most quickly unpopular war in American history and has driven up home mortgage rates, car loan interest rates, the price of gas, the price of diesel fuel and inflation on all prices generally, has found a new angle to campaign on,” O’Donnell said.
He went on to reference the comments Trump made about U.S. Senator Jon Husted of Ohio at a rally in Kentucky on Saturday (October 17). “I examined his ass, and then I looked at his shoulders. I looked at his feet, I looked at his hand. I looked at his jawline, studying… he’s got a jawline,” the president said of Husted.
“This is not AI,” O’Donnell continued before playing footage of Trump making those comments. “This is really the current president of the United States.”
The longtime reporter said to imagine the reaction if any other president or political figure in history made comments like Trump’s on Saturday. “This is madness,” O’Donnell stated. “This is utter insanity. Yes, it’s silly, and yes, it’s easy to joke about, and it will be joked about forever, but it is also presidential madness. The man is president of the United States. He does not seem to know that, at times.”
O’Donnell called it “another marker of the cognitive decline of Donald Trump” and urged Vance and the Cabinet to “invoke the 25th Amendment and remove the powers of the presidency from Donald Trump.”
He noted that Trump would then be allowed to appeal to Congress, but in doing so he’d have to explain himself. “Donald Trump might convincingly testify to Congress, ‘Ah, it was just a joke. It’s just me having fun,’” O’Donnell said. “But while he’s defending himself on that, members of Congress could ask Donald Trump about all his other demonstrations and proofs that he is unfit for office.”
O’Donnell concluded, “And so that’s how lost Donald Trump is in these final two weeks of the campaign — he’s talking about his candidate’s ass. That’s how lost the Republican Party is.”
