MS NOW’s Lawrence O’Donnell Defends Anthony Fauci Against ‘Disgraced’ Republicans
What To Know
- Lawrence O’Donnell defended Dr. Anthony Fauci during a Senate hearing, criticizing Republican senators for attacking Fauci’s role in the COVID-19 response.
- O’Donnell praised Fauci for his leadership in accelerating vaccine development and saving lives, while noting that Republicans benefited from the vaccine without acknowledging Fauci’s contributions.
- He supported Fauci’s right to plead the Fifth and condemned Republican efforts to criminalize Fauci without evidence, emphasizing Fauci’s integrity and public service.
Lawrence O’Donnell jumped to Anthony Fauci‘s defense amid the former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ Senate hearing about his response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment rights while being grilled by Rand Paul, a Republican senator from Kentucky, and O’Donnell supported his decision on the July 29 episode of The Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell.
“Republican senators disgraced themselves today, attacking the man who saved lives, possibly millions of lives, during the COVID-19 outbreak,” O’Donnell began. “The man who helped speed the development of a vaccine because of the research that he had led and supported on exactly that kind of virus for years before the outbreak of the pandemic, of the anticipation of exactly the kind of pandemic that hit the world in 2020.”
He continued, “That’s why the vaccine that has saved so many of our lives reached us so quickly and not one senator in that room today did one thing to save a single life during the COVID-19 pandemic. But they lined up to get their COVID-19 shots as soon as they could and they neer thanked Dr. Fauci for helping to speed the development of that vaccine.”
O’Donnell later pointed out that “Rand Paul has said that Dr. Fauci should be in prison without ever once having named a crime that Dr. Fauci could ever be charged with.”
He defended the scientist against Paul and other Republicans who have tried to use his 2020 diary entries against him, supporting Dr. Fauci’s right to plead the Fifth in front of the Senate committee.
The journalist said, “There is no higher calling than saving lives. There is nothing we could ever do more important than saving a single life and most of us will never know the feeling of saving a life. All of us owe our gratitude to Anthony Fauci and many of us may owe our lives to Anthony Fauci. Anthony Fauci owes nothing to Republicans in the U.S. Senate. He does not owe them an answer to a single question. He’s already answered every one of the questions that they were throwing around that room today. He’s answered them many times in congressional testimony and other interviews. Every one of those questions he has answered in previous appearances.
He then concluded, “Sometimes news stories come down to a very simple right and wrong, and this is one of them. Anthony Fauci is right and every one of those Republican senators is very, very wrong.”
