More ‘Clueless’ Originals Could Join Alicia Silverstone in Sequel Series: Report

We’re totally buggin’ right now because the arc of Hollywood remakes, sequels, requels, and what have you has finally bent to a Clueless series… with Alicia Silverstone, no less!

That’s right, a new Clueless TV show is happening. It’s technically not the first Clueless series, since one did air for three seasons in the late ’90s, but it is the first time Silverstone is reprising her role as the one and only Cher Horowitz. Plus, a new report from Deadline indicates she might not be the only original Clueless star to feature in the series.

Here’s what we know so far.

When will Clueless premiere?

A premiere date has not yet been revealed, but what we do know is that it will film in Los Angeles sometime in 2027. It has been given the official green light by Paramount+.

Who will star in Clueless?

Alicia Silverstone will reprise her role as Cher, only this time, she will be a mother to a teenager. No other castmates have yet been announced, but we do know that the series is being written by Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss. Silverstone will executive produce alongside the three, and original Clueless writer-director Amy Heckerling and film producer Robert Lawrence will executive produce as well.

Deadline reports that the producers are working to bring back as many original stars as possible, but no word yet on which of the alums that could include.

There’s no word yet on whether any of the original film’s stars — Stacey Dash, Paul Rudd, Donald Faison, Breckin Meyer, Elisa Donovan, Jeremy Sisto, Wallace Shawn, Twink Caplan, or Dan Hedaya — will return to their roles. (Brittany Murphy, who played a lead role in the film, died in 2009.) Dash has, however, expressed an interest in returning to her role, especially if the project involves Amy Heckerling.

What is Clueless about?

The series will serve as a sequel to the instantly iconic 1995 movie. The description tells us, “Beloved Beverly Hills icon Cher Horowitz (Silverstone) has figured out a lot: She’s successful in business and has mastered motherhood—that is, until her daughter’s high school years, and Cher finds that parenting a teenager makes her feel ‘clueless’ all over again.”

In a statement, Paramount+ originals boss Jane Wiseman said of the news, “Clueless is coming home. Thirty-one years ago, Alicia Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz captivated audiences with her signature chic style, sharp wit, and relentless optimism, helping make ‘Clueless’ a box office hit and instant pop culture classic. We’re especially proud to be filming this much-anticipated series in Los Angeles, honoring its starring role in the original film while investing in the city’s exceptional talent and crews.”

Speaking to Deadline about whether the series will leave room for more after Season 1, Wiseman said, “If I can leave it open-ended, I’d like to, but the idea is that this particular version of the show is supposed to be an event. It’s supposed to be open and closed where Cher is in her life and what she and her daughter are up to, and how we can bring the cast back to celebrate it.”

What else is there to know about Clueless?

A Clueless series has been knocking around in the TBD bins in Hollywood for quite some time now. Previously, Peacock was in the process of developing one but that got the kibosh in April. Prior to that, in 2019, CBS Studios was reportedly considering a reboot of the series that was described as a “Mean Girls meets Riverdale meets a Lizzo music video” project.

ABC debuted a Clueless TV show in 1996, which featured Rachel Blanchard as Cher and saw the return of Dash, Faison, Donovan, Shawn, and Caplan to their roles. In 2020, Peacock previously considered creating a spinoff centered on Dash’s character Dionne.
