Why ‘Neagley’ Is Darker Than ‘Reacher’ — Cast Teases How Spinoff Breaks Away
Comic-Con
What To Know
- The spinoff series Neagley centers on a fan-favorite character from Reacher who was elevated in the TV adaptation beyond her original role in Lee Child’s novels.
- The creative team aimed to honor the Reacher universe while ensuring Neagley stands on its own.
- Cast members tease that Neagley will be significantly darker and more psychologically complex.
In the series Reacher, Frances Neagley, played by Maria Sten, is Jack Reacher’s (Alan Ritchson) most trusted military ally, as well as a brilliant private investigator and a former U.S. Army Master Sergeant. She served under Reacher and was personally handpicked as a founding member of the elite 110th Special Investigations Unit. And beyond her impressive résumé, she has also grown into one of the most beloved and fan-favorite characters in the Reacher universe.
In Lee Child‘s original novels, Jack Reacher is a solitary drifter with few friends, relying on an internal monologue to solve his cases, a format that does not translate well to television. The solution: The showrunners elevated Neagley’s role in the main series to give Reacher an intellectual equal to bounce ideas off of. Sten’s turn soon became so successful that she was written into seasons where her character never originally appeared in the books. As a result, she got her own series, Neagley, premiering September 16, right after the finale of Reacher Season 4.
Expanding a hit franchise can be a risky proposition. Too much reliance on the original series, and the spinoff struggles to find its own identity. Drift too far away, and fans wonder why it’s connected at all. According to the cast, creating a series that honored Reacher without becoming overly dependent on it required careful planning from the creative team.
“That was the big challenge we had going into this,” said star Greyston Holt, who plays Detective Hudson Riley. “That was mostly on the shoulders of Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton, the creators, in writing a show that honored the source material, the Reacher universe, but also making something that stands on its own legs.”
“I think ultimately what sets our show apart is we really dive into the humanity and the people behind the tough exteriors, and find out why our characters are the way they are,” continued Holt. “And also, it’s much more twisted and sinister… I just finished watching [the season] last week, and it’s friggin’ dark. Very dark.”
“He’s the worst of the worst,” added Jasper Jones, who plays Keno.
“It builds into a cacophony of heaviness and action and mystery. And I think it will keep viewers at the edge of their seats,” explained Holt.
“We understand she clearly has some issues she needs to work through; she has some trauma she has not dealt with. And of course, we want to know why that has made her who she is,” explained star Sten. “I think it is understood she has used this thing that happened to her and turned it into a weapon.”
