‘Best Medicine’: What to Expect When Martin Clunes Returns in Season 2
What To Know
- Martin Clunes will reprise his role as Robert Best, the father of Josh Charles’ Dr. Martin Best, in Season 2 of Best Medicine, premiering September 22 on Fox.
- Charles and executive producers Liz Tuccillo and Rodney Ferrell tease what’s coming up between father and son.
Robert Best is returning to Port Wenn! TV Insider has learned that Martin Clunes, who played the central doc of Doc Martin on which this series is based, will be back as the father of Josh Charles‘ Dr. Martin Best in Best Medicine Season 2.
Clunes guest-starred in Season 1 Episode 9, “Doc Martin,” during which Martin brought up the fact that they never talked about what happened to his sister, Rosemary, who died. “I can’t remember the last time you said my sister’s name,” Martin pointed out. “I cannot and will not talk about her,” Robert said in their final conversation of the episode. But that’s going to change in Season 2, which premieres on Tuesday, September 22.
When Clunes’ Robert returns, “he’s going to be sort of, I think, hopefully trapped in an uncomfortable evening with a bunch of crazy townspeople. But at the same time, he will be going through his own troubles. So, he will be a little off balance, but of course, he won’t admit to it,” showrunner Liz Tuccillo told TV Insider on the set of the cozy dramedy.

“And then at the end of the day, he and Martin will go even a little bit deeper with their relationship and with the past and with Rosemary, the sister that passed away,” she continued. “So, it’ll be an opportunity to go to have much more hilarity with Martin Clunes, but also to go sort of deeper emotionally.”
Added executive producer Rodney Ferrell, “Last season, you saw that there was this thing like, ‘I’m not going to talk about Rosemary. I’m not talking about my daughter, don’t want to do it.’ There’s such unsaid things for both of them about grief and fault, and we’re going to go there this time when they come because I think it’s a lot of what is holding Martin back from things is never having dealt with this. Same thing with his father. So I think we’re going to try to explore that with the two of them.”
Charles had yet to read the script for Clunes’ return, but he does have an idea for what he’d love to see for father and son. “I just wanted them just to be together a little bit. I would’ve loved a road trip or something that put them in a car together and have to be forced with each other and have to deal with something that would kind of, just by their environment, force them to have to confront each other,” he told us. “But I’m sure it’ll be something that’ll be silly and funny and also probably have some heart to it.”
Robert’s return also has to mean more with his sister, Sarah (Annie Potts). “There’s the real serious, emotional elements, and then emotional elements that we handle a little bit more with comedy. I think Sarah is going to be less forgiving. And I think she might still be holding a little bit more of a grudge, and we’re going to handle that. It’s still going to go to a real place, but I think the comedic part will be handled more on that side of it,” Ferrell said.

I didn’t think I would like it, but as it turns out I really enjoy the series. I do prefer the original Doc Martin, but this is cute in its own way

The British version (1st 6 seasons only) is starting to cycle around again on the Ovation network. Yes, the
American version took a lot of elements from it, but it really is its own show.
Dr. Martin Best is more of a fish out of water trying to acclimate himself to a town so crazy-ass that it has a monthly bean festival that no one ever misses for any reason (such as... any kind of life outside the confines of the town - the pitfall of every small-town show).
Dr. Martin Ellingham is a snob who thinks the town and everyone in it is beneath him, with both the genius and personality of Dr. Gregory House.
Both are good shows in their own right.

Best Medicine got me obsessed with Doc Martin to the point of wanting to plan a trip to Cornwall, UK's Port Isaac where the original Port Wenn is filmed. Bringing in some of those characters or even just the actors would be BRILLIANT!!! Mrs Tishell...Joe Penhale and even the original Louisa Catherine Catz. If you like Best Medicine, Doc Martin is a MUST WATCH! All 9 seasons!

I tried, but just don't like this show and I really wanted to, but I love Clunes, he never disappoints, so I'll watch only when he's on.

I really looked forward to Clunes appearance on Best Medicine, I really hope he brings his own perspective having played Doc Martin, to the father opening up more or at the very least helping his son with the grief he bears. I cannot wait for season 2 to start airing this Tuesday the 22nd. I didn’t think I would like it but just fell in love with the story and the characters. At first I didn’t warm to it but by the 3rd episode I was pulled in.

Worst show on tv.

No way. It's cute and a little quirky and not for everyone, but I love Josh Charles and Annie Potts, and the rest of the cast is charming. Say it's a niche taste for a lot of PBS-like-minded.
