Some Today fans weren’t fans of Vicky Nguyen‘s recent on-air jab at Carson Daly.
Nguyen, who is NBC News’ Chief Consumer Investigative Correspondent, frequently appears on Today to share tips and tricks on saving and making the most of your money. During the show’s Friday, July 17, episode, Nguyen aired a segment about how to find the perfect grill for your budget and summer cooking needs.
“I could have watched 20 minutes of that,” Craig Melvin said after the segment. Daly stated, “Al [Roker] and I’ve got a lot to say on that topic,” before listing off some of his helpful grilling tips. “If you use the infrared thermometer, make sure that tip is where it reads. It’s gotta be in the center of the protein. If you go too far, you’re gonna get a false reading. The other thing I’ll say if you’re interested in buying a barbecue is it’s not one of those things where you get what you pay for. The most expensive grill on the market is not necessarily the best.”
Roker noted that Nguyen discussed how the best grill may not be the most expensive in the segment. Nguyen used the moment to playfully poke fun at Daly, stating, “Yeah. Thank you for mansplaining that again, Carson.”

Her comment elicited lots of laughs from her colleagues. “Whoa! You come for the grill advice, you stay for the ba-boom!” Roker quipped. Daly, who pretended to look offended, stated, “I just am passionate about the grill!”
In a Monday, July 20, Instagram post, Nguyen shared screenshots from a fan email she received after the grilling segment. “You owe Mr. Daly an apology for your ‘mansplaining’ comment,” the message read. “It’s actually quite ironic that you’d say that, considering that your pieces are INCREDIBLY patronizing – ‘Hey America – you can save money on those high grocery bills by using coupons and shopping at Aldi! You’re welcome!’”
In the email, the person claimed that Nguyen “treats viewers as if we’re idiots.” It continued, “I wish one of your cohosts would say to you ‘Thanks for elite-splaining that to the unwashed masses AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA’ and give YOU a phony hug.”
The fan concluded the not-so-nice email by writing, “Get off your high horse, lady. I know this is only being read by an assistant who will never pass it on, but at least I hope it give you a smile if you find your boss as insufferable as the average viewer does.”
Nguyen jokingly reacted to the comments in the post’s caption by writing, “It’s hard out here for a consumer reporter.”
Fans reacted to the email and shared their support for Nguyen in the post’s comments. “I learned long ago just because I know something, it doesn’t mean everyone else knows. Oh, and I wish I could work somewhere with such good natured ribbing. Keep up the great work!” one user wrote. Another added, “Literally was JUST talking to a friend at dinner this weekend saying how you are just the sweetest and she commented on how much she enjoys watching you!”

Someone else shared, “I am so sorry you had to get such an awful message like this. I look forward to your segments all the time. You bring great information to your viewers.” A different person posted, “I cracked up when you said that! Like teasing your brother…it was perfect! And any time you have a segment coming up, I stop getting ready for work and watch. Your segments are very informative and helpful to consumers and viewers. Ride that ‘high horse’…you earned it!”
In a comment of his own, Daly joked, “I see you got my letter! love ya Vicky.” In response, Nguyen wrote, “Phew I’m glad we’re good.”
Roker also hopped in the post’s comments, writing, “Vicky, Deborah’s mom has the saying that fits for this person: Bless his/her heart!” Thanking him, Nguyen replied, “You give the best advice and also the spiciest takes and so when you approved my joke on the couch, I knew all was well.”
