The Reason ‘The Hunting Party’ Won’t Be Saved After That Brutal Cliffhanger Ending
What To Know
- The Hunting Party cast’s options have expired, meaning the series won’t be saved.
- The drama ended on a major cliffhanger to open up the world of the show for future seasons.
Well, there goes any hope of The Hunting Party being saved.
The NBC drama was axed nearly a month after its Season 2 finale aired and after the network had already set its 2026-2027 schedule on June 1. Cast options expired on July 1, and the lack of any extensions is proof that Universal Television wasn’t able to find a new place for it to air or stream (it did well on Netflix and Peacock), according to Deadline.
The Season 2 finale ended with Bex (Melissa Roxburgh), Hassani (Patrick Sabongui), and Shane (Josh McKenzie), the team who hunts down the serial killers who escaped from The Pit (a top-secret prison filled with killers who were seemingly dead) taking down Lazarus (Kari Matchett) — Shane’s mother who had seemingly graduated from the program and wanted to ensure other inmates did, too — but finding out that there was something major they didn’t know about what was going on.
Another part of that program, Philip Beaumont (Michael O’Keefe) joined the team at their bar and revealed he’d been trying to have The Pit shut down for years in the finale. He wanted to stop the secret experiments and the graduate program, and with Lazarus and Mallory gone, they would need a new boss to lead the recapture of the inmates still out there: Bex. Furthermore, he revealed that there was a reason that list was so long: The Pit was also creating serial killers. It would’ve been interesting to see what those killers were like. That seemingly set the series up to continue for years to come, since each episode covered the search for one killer.
Ahead of the finale, TV Insider spoke with executive producers JJ Bailey and Jake Coburn about how it would set up future seasons. “We open things back up at the very end, sending our team in a new direction,” said Bailey.
Added Coburn, “The dynamic of the show and the world of the show is going to shift a little.”
The series also ended without any resolution for the potential romance between Bex and Shane, as well as the mystery just introduced about Hassani’s late wife. He found a newspaper clipping with a photo of her on the wall of the journalist in whose home they’d found one of the escaped killers (John Corbett‘s Xander). The headline read: Civil Health Fund Announces New Medical Supply Push

I wish that the networks would listen to the viewers. This is one of a couple shows that had the potential to go for years!!! So they are going to bring on another reality show!!

Was looking forward to season 3 (just finished watching the first two seasons with the family again -- when my daughter discovered it had been cancelled). Boo! We don't watch reality or variety shows, so I guess it's CIA, Tracker, and Elsbeth this fall. We were excited about the pending launch of Line of Fire, but have now decided to wait a few years to see if it's successful before starting it.

I was waiting for another season 3. I can not believe no 3rd season again. Such a goof show.

Another great regular tv network show with a high IMDB rating and excellent acting cancelled. Probably to add more reality shows ( aka stupid tv ). Yes I watch a few but it seems the ratings demographic can’t watch anything but reality, to busy on their phones to watch a show you have to pay attention to.

I’m on my last episode of season 2 and am very disappointed it was canceled. I don’t watch reality TV and I am sick of the same old type of shows. This was different and just like the show Found, they cancel it and Mo one picks it up. Do better, networks, and listen to your viewers!!

There have been worse cliffhanger endings. At least it ended in such away. That you had at least a rough idea what might have happened next. None of the core cast were on Death's door step. So at least there is that.

I really was looking forward to season 3. I've streamed watch the series several times not and was anticipating the next season to only find out it's been canceled. I'm very disappointed as I found the show to be riveting and on pins to watch the next episode. Please find a way to save this show.
