It’s time to say goodbye to the fictional town of Serenity. Netflix has revealed the fate of Sweet Magnolias. The small-town cozy drama, based on novels by Sherryl Woods, first premiered in 2020 and quickly became a Netflix hit.

Season 5 dropped back in June, and fans were already looking ahead to what could be next for leading ladies Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Helen (Heather Headley), and Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott). Three months later, we have our answer.

Sweet Magnolias explores the lives of the three women, who have been friends since their childhood days in Serenity. Through all of the ups, downs, and changes they’ve gone through, they’ve always been there for each other. Scroll down for the latest on Sweet Magnolias and what’s next for the cast.

Is Sweet Magnolias returning for Season 6?

No, Sweet Magnolias will not return for Season 6. On September 18, Deadline reported that the small-town drama has been canceled after five seasons.

Swisher previously told TV Insider that she was hopeful for another installment. “There’s still more life to live together,” she teased.

And while she noted that getting to do five seasons has been “incredible,” she added, “I’m just kind of in this really interesting moment of utter gratitude for this experience and … there would be no greater joy than to do another season and really wrap it up in a beautiful way.”

What’s next for the Sweet Magnolias cast?

While Sweet Magnolias is over, Garcia Swisher is staying at Netflix. She is teaming up with the Sweet Magnolias creator Sheryl J. Anderson for a new series. She’ll be trading the Sweet Magnolias margaritas for wine in Ladies of the House, based on Lauren Edmondson’s novel of the same name.

The synopsis reads: “So what’s being poured at this family winery? When its charismatic owner dies unexpectedly, his wife and two adult daughters must battle through their issues with each other in order to confront challenges with the business, their extended family, and the men in their lives. Good friends and good wine will aid in the journey to hang on to the winery, but what matters most is that they find a way to hang on to each other.”

Anderson will serve as showrunner and executive producer, while Garcia Swisher and Kate Gordon will executive produce under their Rolling Clover banner. Black Label Media, the company behind La La Land and Sicario, will also executive produce.

Justin Bruening, who played Garcia Swisher’s on-screen husband, Cal, will next appear in the film The Other Side of the Window.

Like was written in this article - there should be one final season to wrap it up in a beautiful way. Shame on Netflix and how they are treating the fans.

Can they not have the decency to have a final season with a wrap-up ending? This happens too much and as viewer, I have dedicated my valuable time to watching this show to have it drove off a cliff because it doesn't have a season of conclusion. If this continues to happen, I will drop Netflix.

This is what I absolutely despise!!! They put out a REALLY good show that people become invested in and anxiously await the next season to continue watching and they cancel it!! This has been done SO MANY times that I have started watching DVD'S more that I watch TV! The good shows get cancelled , but the boring, uninteresting, not worth watching shows are kept on for years!!! What is the problem?! Do they not realize this is going to COST them viewers not attract more?! I am so over the stupidity... Start keeping the good shows or just keep losing viewers. If they hate their jobs that much, maybe they should find a new line of work because it's not working out for them or us!!!

I'm extremely disappointed to see that Sweet Magnolias was canceled. In my mind, and the mind of many of my friends it was one of the best series that Netflix had. I'm not sure what thought process went into this cancellation because everyone I told about it, tuned in and loved the show, but I know a lot of people are disappointed about it.. Anyone who values friemdship and length of long term commitment of female friendships understood that show. I feel like there was no consideration given to more than the characters of the series, and never got the meaning behind the show for its female viewers. Women who carry decades long friemdships, who shared all of life's ups and downs with each other and even settled disagreements with friendship separations for periods of times, but came together again because the hurt of being separated hurt more than what caused the separation to begin with. Those who chose to cancel this show apparently had NO IDEA of what women overall took out of the show. For some it was a way of healing and remembering friends who had passed and being able to relive those moments through the Sweet Magnolias. Netflix executives I hope you will reconsider your decision because there aren't enough shows like this one.It hit home with many and was so well written it was a great respite from much of the other junk on TV and Netflix. It didn't include negative social issues it dealt with normal social issues like how people can live in peace with individuals of different color or beliefs. It showed families that had financial problems & how when people work together as a community many individuals benefit, The show addressed emotional effect divorce has on a family and showed how when people came tas a community, they can feed children who are hungry. You cancelled a great show that deal with important issues and IT SHOULD BE BROUGHT BAck

This last season was not as good IMO. It felt just way too fake, but still a wholesome show. Would have been nice to have a final season to wrap it all up.
