What To Know

  • Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly will reunite onscreen for the first time in a decade in the October 20 episode of NCIS: Origins.
  • Find out what brings them back together as showrunner David J. North discusses what leads to the reunion and what it was like to have Harmon back on the NCIS set.

It‘s happening! Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Tony DiNozzo are together again!

Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly will be sharing the screen for the first time in 10 years in the Tuesday, October 20, episode of NCIS: Origins, airing at 10/9c. (Now we know why Origins executive producer told TV Insider, “There is not an NCIS fan alive that is going to want to miss this [episode].”)  The last time they were together onscreen was when Weatherly exited in the NCIS Season 13 finale. Check out the photo above to see them together again — why are they in the NCIS morgue?!

Both starred on NCIS since the beginning, including the two JAG episodes that served as a backdoor pilot for the mothership. In fact, in the series premiere, it was just Gibbs and Tony on the team. Now, Weatherly is back on NCIS in Season 24 — and the agency’s new director, and Harmon is appearing onscreen in all 10 Origins Season 3 episodes as part of a present-day mystery that ties back to his days at Camp Pendleton in the ’90s (when he’s played by Austin Stowell).

So, what brings Gibbs and Tony back together? According to CBS, “The highly anticipated reunion finds Leroy Jethro Gibbs returning to NCIS’s D.C. headquarters to enlist the help of new director Tony DiNozzo after Gibbs was shot by unknown assailants.” That kicked off the Origins Season 3 premiere. His shooter said, “One down, one to go,” thinking that Gibbs was dead thanks to a Marine breathing technique. Does this mean that Tony is the “one to go”? We know that Gibbs is going to see Woody (Bobby Moynihan) in the present-day in NCIS: Origins Season 3 Episode 2 to run the fingerprint he took off his own neck in the premiere. That will “directly lead” to this reunion, North told us.

The showrunner was hesitant to share any details about Mark Harmon’s return to the NCIS office, but he did tell us for our cover story, that having him filming on that set again “felt surreal, incredible, hard to put into words. It was like coming home. Mark is amazing in those scenes. The fans are going to lose their minds.”

After the premiere, he added, “For me, this franchise has been so meaningful and such a big part of my life, and I have written so many episodes and been on this journey with Mark that seeing him there and being there with him after so many years was really moving and emotional.”

When we spoke with Harmon and Weatherly ahead of the new seasons about their returns, both were vague about the possibility of crossovers. “Isn’t that a good question?” Weatherly said, slyly avoiding answering it. But he did say that Harmon’s Origins return would be “a huge resonant thunderclap to fans” and called him “the OG.”
