TV’s canine detective is going to be reunited with his partner on Hudson & Rex, which has been renewed for Season 9.
Citytv has revealed that John Reardon is returning as Detective Charlie Hudson in the new season of the Canadian procedural drama. “Miss me?” Reardon asks “Rex” in the video shared on Instagram. “Let’s get back to work, partner.”
Also returning in the 12-episode Season 9, along with Reardon and the canine are Mayko Nguyen (Dr. Sarah Truong), Kevin Hanchard (Superintendent Joseph Donovan), Justin Kelly (Tech Analyst Jesse Mills), and Luke Roberts (Detective Mark Hudson). Roberts joined the cast in Season 8 as Rex’s new human partner, a veteran of canine units in the Canadian forces and the Halifax PD. (Season 8 premieres in the U.S. on June 11 on UP Faith & Family.)
“I’m excited to step back into the role of Charlie as Hudson and Rex moves into its next chapter,” Reardon said in a statement. “The series has earned a passionate audience around the world, and I’m grateful for the continued support. I’m looking forward to beginning production on the new season with the cast, crew, creative team, production, and network partners — and to sharing more adventures with Rex and the fans.”

Added Christina Jennings, Chairman & CEO, Shaftesbury (which produces the series), “John is a talented actor and we’re incredibly pleased to have him return as Detective Charlie Hudson. We know that fans missed him and so did we. We look forward to getting back to work and bringing fans an exciting new season.”
When Reardon returns to Hudson & Rex, it will be after Charlie left to search for his missing brother, Jack, in South America. Now, the season description teases, “Charlie [shocks] everyone with his return to St. John’s with one final task to accomplish before putting the Belize nightmare behind him. Charlie’s return creates a complicated dilemma for loyal Rex and sets off a chain reaction inside the St. John’s Police Department.” Production begins in St. John’s, Newfoundland, in June.
Reardon, who underwent treatment for tonsil cancer, said in a statement on Instagram in September 2025 that it wasn’t his choice to leave the show. “The truth is: I didn’t leave Hudson & Rex. After taking a couple months to go through cancer treatment, I was given a clean bill of health and cleared and ready to return to work. But the team chose to go in a different direction. Although this is not how I had hoped the 7 year journey would end – I’m very appreciative of the opportunity to play a part in building something special,” he wrote.
Hudson & Rex is produced by Shaftesbury and Pope Productions Ltd., in association with Citytv and Beta Film. Sherry White is the showrunner. Christina Jennings, Scott Garvie, Lisa Porter, John Reardon, Kevin Hanchard, and Sherri Davis serve as executive producers.

I also stopped watching when Reardon was replaced. I'd like to think the backlash Shaftesbury and Pope Productions Ltd. received for their inexplicable decision to let him go had something to do with his welcome return.

Finally they realized letting john go was wrong. I stop watching hudson &rex after john let go. I understand Dvb passed away due to illness. But getting rid of the other half of the star charter was wrong . Bring in a new one with same last name ruined the show. I will be watching again. Charlie Hudson is back and the chemistry of the team will be back .

I stopped watching when John was stupidly replaced. Nothing short of his return would make me re-subscribe to this much-missed show. As part of the fan base that protested to Shaftesbury, I would like to think Christina Jennings finally came to her senses because of our loyalty to John. I hope they are paying dearly to get him back.

The couple shows at the end of season 7 where John wasnt in the show that much already weren't the same. Then when we heard he wasn't coming back we refused to watch. Yippee!!! The fans shouted and the production company heard us! John Reardon's honest interaction with Rex was impossible to recreate with a different person. You can never cut out the heart of a show and expect it to survive! I was not going to watch the show again, but now that John Reardon is back, so am I. Of course I am sad that the original Rex (Diesel) passed away, but I look forward to watching the relationship between the new Rex and John Reardon develop!

Nah she didn't. They had her act like he barely ever existed along with the rest of the cast & the show in general. The show 'ghosted' his character. Then the actress probably got a big raise along with the sudden promotion to being a detective as well as a forensic expert.
But I am thrilled John is returning. I like Luke though he just lacks the warmth & naturalness of Charlie. He will stay on the show. I wonder how that will work out.

I don't agree, I don't want them together, I never saw any chemistry between them. And I would prefer they send Sarah back into the lab instead of her being a policewoman!!! She could even leave the series as far as I am concerned. Let her go back to Michael, bring in someone else as a possible connection with Charlie!!

This is great! news!...We watched the show from the beginning every week...that is up until my husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer and passed away...I am from St. John's and I was very unhappy at how John was treated,especially after under going cancer treatment himself ...I stopped watching the show when John left , after finding out he was treated so poorly...I always hoped he would come back...but thought that may not ever be a possibility...Imagine my surprise! upon finding out he is coming back to once again play Charlie alongside with his beloved Rex!...What a classy gentleman he is...Not everyone would have done that...Thank You! for coming back John and looking forward to the new fall Season 9!...with Charlie & Rex...!...

I have watched the show since the very first episode and loved it.i hope to see Charlie and Rex get back to solving crimes with the whole team.And I know Diesel will never be replaced but I don’t feel the writer are doing Diesels family (dogs) members justice. They did such a great job with diesels things he was capable of doing the writers need to do the same for the other dogs. John and writers can make this show great again.

Diesel was a once-in-a-lifetime dog for a trainer. Perhaps Sherri Davis, dog trainer, might look beyond Diesel's nephews to find most astute dogs.

I read somewhere that they are making Luke a long lost brother to Charlie, which sounds ridiculous to me, if true. The more I think about it, I would be in favor of a scenario that just wiped away Season 8 as though it did not exist. Sarah becoming a detective was a little crazy. And how will Charlie handle Sarah not keeping her promise to keep Rex in the event of his demise? Also, it was not credible as a story line that the team would not go all out to find Charlie. So, it awill be wonderful to have Charlie back if they let Charlie be Charlie and do not diminish his character. I hope Charlie's return is handled in the scripts with same class that John Reardon is showing by returning.

We actually wrote a “shame on you” formal letter to Shaftesbury regarding their dismissal of John. We also have “boycotted” watching “Hudson & Rex” since that time. With this JOYFUL announcement, we may resume watching on June 11th. Welcome back John.

Thank you for writing to Shaftesbury. Between dwindling ratings and all the letters John's fans wrote, Shaftesbury had no choice other than to shut down the series. John's fans rock! BTW, John is shooting season 9 in June for release probably in the fall. Season 8 is showing this June.

Hudson & Rex is my favorite show on TV. My husband & I have watched every show (except season 8) many, many times. John Reardon did not deserve the treatment he received after his recovery from cancer. How could the company look at themselves in the mirror after firing such a great actor who just recovered from cancer. They should have stood by him and been loyal. I am anxiously awaiting Season 9. Good to know he will be back. I believe he was let go due to him being sick and not this other direction thing shows always say when people are let go. Main characters on shows should not be let go unless show is ending. I cant believe I watch the because I am not an animal lover, but the dog got me. Very, very sad the original Rex passed away.

We've been trying really hard to give Mark a chance to grow into the character and a part of the team, and will watch the rest of season 8, but if Charlie isn't back we will have to discontinue watching. There is no spark with Mark, everyone, even Rex seem to be sidelined. There is no working together, no commodory. Just Mark.

Thank you to all the fans all over the world who wrote letters of protest when John Reardon was taken off this amazing show. I too refused to watch any episode after season 7 episode 3. After all, John was the heart and soul of this show, along with the beloved Diesel, and his character building of Charlie Hudson was sensitive, empathetic and intelligent. He truly understood the relationship between Charlie and Rex. After Diesel's tragic passing, we needed John to provide the continuity and excellence of Hudson & Rex that, sadly, the rest of the cast just could not achieve without him. Thank god the the producers have finally come to their senses. Thank you John for being gracious and appreciative of your fans to return to the show after you were so badly treated. John Reardon is a talented actor who plays the part of Charlie Hudson to perfection. In my opinion, it would have been impossible to replace him. Also, the other cast members work together to make the series unforgettable. As a child (many years ago), I was a big fan of Lassie, Rin-Tin-Tin and Bullet (Roy Rogers' German shepherd). I am sure this series also brings back a lot of memories to baby boomers.

What I’d like to see on the show is that Charlie and Sarah kept in touch while he was away thru some obscure web site, so she knew he didn’t die. What I’d like to see is them— togeather — ending or solving whatever happened with rescuing his brother. And lastly, I would like to see Charlie and Sarah realizing they are meant to be togeather forever.

I will re subscribe to ups faith and family. Because the choice they made to get rid of Charlie got rid of me a loyal fan. Because without Charlie you can’t have the show. John Reardon as Charlie Hudson on this show has been one of the most fun actors to watch and I always loved the relationship he had with that awesome dog, especially off the set. Watching the relationship between Charlie and Rex warmed my heart during every episode and made me love my relationship with my beloved sheltie, the sweetest, even more.
I am so glad and happy to hear of his return. I am glad his fans worldwide worked so hard to help bring our favorite show back.

The show remained exceptional, even with the new character played by Luke Robert’s.

There are so many other ways they could have handled his cancer, like having the character also have cancer. The network should be ashamed of itself for treating a victim of cancer so poorly. Judie, I agree with you. Not much grieving on Sarah's part. I suggested that when Hudson returns they get involved in other romances because they had zilch chemistry. And agree that the new guy lacked natural warmth. Even if Reardon 'acted' it, he did a great job, but TBH I think his natural personality showed through on the show and that's why people were bummed he was replaced and how they did it not nice.

I can't wait for the new season 9 with John Reardon returning. Hudson & Rex is my favorite show and I've turned so many other people on to it as well. I don't know how many more times I can watch the reruns of the other seasons! Pretty soon, I'll be spouting the actors' dialogue by heart. (smile)
I also miss the original Rex so much, and wish he could have lived longer, but his family replacement is also wonderful.

I am so Thankful that John Reardon is returning as Charlie Hudson. We just began watching Hudson & Rex in the USA just a couple of months ago; and are totally addicted to the opportunity to view such a wonderful series. Canada is an absolutely beautiful country and the quality of the actors and wonderful writers are impeccable. We were so heartbroken to hear about the misfortune of losing Diesel, and Charlie Hudson. It was as if we lost members of our family. Thank you for allowing us to view a wonderful program and for allowing us to watch John Reardon as Charlie.

I want Rex back with Charlie and Charlie back with Sarah. Not sure why they are bringing Luke Roberts back though. No offense to him but his character is superfluous at this point and "Detective Mark" was not a hit with the fans.

2 most important moments of S9 are when Rex found Charlie and when Sarah hugged Charlie. Mark kept the show and the k9 partnering alive. I am grateful. Dont beat people up over it.

Happy to hear that John Reardon is returning after being terminated during his cancer treatment. The chemistry between all the cast/characters is what makes the show work and fun to watch and that is missing in Season 8. So Sorry to hear about the canine(s) and hoping the next season brings some stability to their care and performance. Also hoping the rest of the cast/characters will play a prominent role as previously with John Reardon return since they were reduced to "bit players" in Season 8 with very little chemistry with new "Hudson" castmate. The best news about Hudson & Rex is that John Reardon is in good health. Second best news is that he’s returning to the role of Charlie Hudson.
Like a lot of fans, I watched Season 7 to see whether we did have news about John/Charlie. Season 8 was boycotted by our household because TPTB treated John so appallingly. Thank goodness for fan power.
Now that Charlie’s back, I will also return… as a viewer.
What we need is an already married Charlie and Sarah (she wears her wedding ring on a chain about her neck); and that our Sarah is early stages of expecting their baby. Rex will give the news away by always laying his head on her lap.

I am beyond excited to see that actor John Reardon is healthy and returning to Hudson and Rex in season 9. I was very sad when he was not to return. He is a very talented actor and all of the cast is wonderful.I also hope he and Sarah stay together but I am not sure of what’s happening with that. I don’t think John Reardon should have to share the role with the actor that replaced him. It was truly John’s show. I’ve tried to watch the new guy but it’s just not working for me. John was just a natural at acting and the part definitely is his. Whoever made the decision to replace him was a big mistake. Lastly, is that the way you treat someone that has been responsible for making a show successful when they have to take a break to receive cancer treatment?!?!?! REALLY????

Just didn't seem right. So glad to read that Charlie is returning. Keep creating great family friendly shows like this for us to watch. So tired of trying to navigate around tiresome news and slasher themed shows (or the plethora of game shows!)

I am beyond excited to see John Reardon return to Hudson and Rex. I was devastated to tears when I found out he wasn't returning to the show, and felt it was very wrong. I specifically and sincerely prayed that they would find a way to bring him back. My husband and I love this show, and would not watch season 8 without him.
I was ecstatic beyond words when I read that he was coming back, and knew that my prayers had been answered.
This show is very well written, it's clean and so interesting. We have grown to love all of the characters, but John made the show as Hudson!
We can't wait for season 9!!!

My wife and I loved this show, Big Time!! When we found about John’s cancer, we prayed hard for him. Then we found out that the real Rex pasted away and we were saddened, but his brother ( I believe) replaced Rex and he was great too. So we were looking forward to John’s return only to find out that the person in charge wasn’t bringing John back 😢 Big Letdown! We didn’t watch any of Season 8. Now we learned of John’s return is definite 👍 We can’t wait to see him in Season 9 😉🙂😃😘

I couldn't be happier that John Reardon is returning as Charlie Hudson. I have watched the last episode that the original Rex was in "Room with a Clue" multiple times as it is so funny. The actor that played the villain was perfect for that role and have seen him in many other TV shows. The highlight of the series is the connection between Charlie and Rex. It really pulls at my heartstrings. I'm looking forward to the same bond that will form between the new Rex and Charlie. I will always miss Rex #1. So glad there are new episodes coming. Since discovering this series I have watched the episodes multiple times, never getting tired of watching that partnership between Rex and Charlie. I watch it in the US on UPTV in Oklahoma.

However I have always thought that he and Dr. Sarah had no chemistry at all. I'd like to see him or them have other romantic relationships, which would give the show a bit of zing. As to fans of 'Hudson' I am gratified that there was enough of an outcry to get him to return. Having him back will just be like coming home again. Welcome back John1
