Dermot Mulroney just confirmed that The Family Stone is getting a sequel — and “everyone’s up for returning.”
During a May interview on The Tangle With Kyle Ridley podcast, Mulroney, who played Everett Stone in the 2005 comedy-drama, dished on what fans can expect from the second film.
“I think it’s going to be entitled The Families Stone,” the actor, 62, said of the sequel to the holiday movie, written and directed by Thomas Bezucha.
Additionally, most of the original cast will return. “Everyone’s up for returning. I can be on record,” Mulroney declared, naming Rachel McAdams, Luke Wilson, and Craig T. Nelson. The Family Stone also featured performances from Sarah Jessica Parker, Elizabeth Reaser, Claire Danes, Ty Giordano, Brian White, Paul Schneider, and Diane Keaton, who died in October 2025.

Mulroney said that after Keaton died at 79, Bezucha “re-approached this storyline. “I think he wrote it very quickly,” he explained. “I’ve read it. It’s brilliant, and a lot of the actors have said yes.”
In The Family Stone, Keaton played Sybil Stone, the heart of the Stone family. Mulroney shared that the iconic actress was “so impactful on all of our lives in that mother part in that life-altering movie.” He also hinted at plenty of shenanigans to come, teasing, “You won’t believe how s*** went down the last 20 years for the Stones.”
In a November interview with CNN, shortly after Keaton’s death, Bezucha said he wanted to honor her “even more now.”
“I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already,” he shared. “Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”
Parker, 61, also addressed the Family Stone sequel in January while speaking with Variety.
“I’m so excited…but it’s a rather bittersweet quandary given the loss of Diane Keaton,” the Sex and the City alum admitted. “But it was a very special group of actors, and prior to Diane’s passing, there had been conversations with everybody, so I hope that we’ll be able to.”
As of writing, a release date for the sequel to The Family Stone has not been announced.
